Outlander executive producer Ron Moore reveals some of what he has in store for season 2.

If there is one thing that Ron Moore seems to have mastered, it’s communications with a passionate fandom. Since Outlander was first announced, Moore has managed to win the hearts of passionate Diana Gabaldon readers, and it’s not just because he’s taken to constantly wearing a kilt. Moore has spoken at endless fan gatherings, created a weekly podcast to keep fans in the loop, and been generous with inside looks at what’s going on with filming.

Recently, Moore’s Twitter account has been rather silent with few tweets since early August. It’s hard to find fault as he was on a global tour to promote the series debut, and then he had to get right back to Scotland to finish filming season 1.

Moore’s Twitter silence ended last night where he made up for lost time. Earlier this week he was in the U.S. to record a commentary track for a Star Trek: The Next Generation DVD. He found himself waiting to board his plane back to Scotland, and he asked the fans if they had questions.

Many questions had to do with the episode “The Garrison Commander” which had just finished airing. Moore gave credit to the design team, the episode director, and the actors for making the brutal flogging look so realistic.

Several astute fans picked up on the fact that the character of Brian Fraser was seen in the end credits, and they wanted to know if he appeared in the flogging scene. Moore confirmed that Brian Fraser, as played by actor Andrew Whipp, is in the scene. He is standing just behind Dougal throughout the scene. He is clearly viewed on two of the camera pans. The screen grabs are below.

Questions then turned to the future. Starz has greenlit the show for a second season. Many fans have wondered if season 2 would cover the entire second novel in Diana Gabaldon’s series called Dragonfly in Amber. Fans of the novels realize that Moore could have only elected to tell part of the story as the novel covers two distinct time periods. He could also have chosen to go the path the Game of Thrones showrunners have taken by pulling in material from two novels at once.

There is no mystery any longer as Moore answered the question.

Fans also have been assured by author Diana Gabaldon that the current actors will remain attached to the show as season 2 will necessitate a time jump. Gabaldon stated in a Facebook Q & A,”…the answer would be no. Caitriona is 35–she can easily play Claire in her 40’s, as well as she plays her in her late 20’s. Besides, you’d _never_ find anyone to play Claire who’s as good as Cait is.”
