‘Outlander’: The ultimate time traveling survivor’s tale
Outlander is simply unpredictable television. It’s not your standard historical drama or romance, it’s genre defying. This year, the show garnered People’s Choice Awards and Golden Globe nominations in just its first season. The writing is smart, with a leading cast of men and women who are both brave, and vulnerable as they wade through the precarious political climate of the the 18th century.
This weekend is the perfect time to marathon season 1, and discover how Claire survives and thrives after being unexpectedly thrown back into the past. ‘Black Sails’: Where women and men vie for control of the high seas
Black Sails has two seasons available, and season 3 starts on January 23. The show is easily the grittiest and most realistic pirate show that has aired. It’s not all walk the plank, and scrub the deck, and Talk Like a Pirate Day. Captain Jack Sparrow wouldn’t last a hot five seconds on Black Sails.
One of the best parts of the show is that at its core, it’s an elaborate chess game of intrigue. The players switch from pawns to knights in the blink of an eye when they are out-schemed, or fate turns against them. Because Black Sails is as much of a mental power game as a physical one, there are several key women who drive the action: the woman who runs the smuggling operations in Nassau, a female pirate who holds her own with the men, the owner of the local brothel who’s looking for revenge, and the kidnapped daughter of a governor.
