This week’s Outlander packed a powerful punch in more ways than one! Read on to find out what series star Sam Heughan had to say about filming *that scene* with Sophie Skelton!

One of the best things about Outlander is that the series isn’t afraid to let its characters really feel the weight of the things that have happened to them.

We’ve seen both Jamie and Claire grapple with some of the cards they’ve been dealt in the past, and now the series is allowing us to do the same with Bree as she continues to come to terms with having been raped by Bonnet not long after she arrived in Wilmington.

Lucky for Bree she’s got a wonderful support system in her mom and da, both of whom have been dealing with the reality of what’s happened to their daughter in different ways.

This week’s episode, however, offers us another tender moment between Bree and Jamie as Jamie broaches the subject of rape as the pair set off into the woods together.

It’s a moment many fans might have been eagerly anticipating — especially given that Jamie might be able to relate to what Bree is going through given what Black Jack did to him at Wentworth Prison.

One thing I wasn’t expected was how heated things got between Jamie and Bree — especially during the part in which Jamie uses a bit of reverse psychology and brute force to make Bree see there’s nothing she could have done to fight Bonnet off.

Jamie’s tactic is a bit jarring — especially given the juxtaposition of how gently he broaches the subject at the beginning of the scene. That being said, it doesn’t take away from the tenderness of the moment.

When I spoke with actor Sam Heughan about the opening scene of this episode, the actor revealed that one of the reasons that scene in particular is so beautiful is because it gives us a glimpse of what Jamie is like as a father.

“There’s a real parallel there in terms of what’s happened to them. It’s big, but Jamie tries to help Bree get through it and it’s actually through forgiveness,” Heughan told Hypable. “At first to me it was hard to get my head around, but it’s a beautiful moment and it actually is the moment we really see Jamie being a father without sort of imposing his will or trying to manhandle her, or mansplain things. He rises above it and it’s a nice moment.”

As we spoke, Heughan went further, offering up some behind-the-scenes insight of what it was like to film that particular scene with co-star Sophie Skelton.

“We shot it twice,” revealed the actor.

Interestingly, Heughan explained that the reason the scene was shot twice was actually due to the weather. In fact, the actor describe the weather on location in Scotland that day as “some of the most horrific weather [he’d] ever seen.”

“It was snow and minus whatever— it was pretty bad. It brought something to [the moment] but unfortunately, it didn’t match [the rest of the scenes] because the weather changed that day,” explained Heughan. “But Sophie is just magnificent. This whole season she’s great, and it’s so fun to work with her because it brings another dynamic to this family.”

Speaking of family dynamics, Claire is also doing her best to help Bree get through things. The pair have a very serious discussion in the first half of this week’s episode where Claire brings up the subject of abortion.

Claire makes it clear to Bree that it’s her decision whether or not she intends to keep the baby, but that she wants her daughter to know that she has options.

When Bree first reveals to Claire that she’s pregnant, she makes it seem as though the baby can only be Bonnet’s. This week, however, Bree confesses that there’s a small chance it could be Roger’s baby after all.

It’s enough for Bree to decide to keep the baby in the end just as she does in the books, and she promises Claire that regardless of who the father turns out to be, she’ll love the baby just the same.

For as many heartfelt moments as Outlander dishes out this week, there’s also a fair bit of drama.

One of the biggest moments of the episode comes when Bree finally realizes what happened to Roger.

As we know, it was all a bit of a huge misunderstanding which started with Lizzie thinking Roger was manhandling Bree against her will.

For a moment, it seemed as though Roger and Bree would be reunited quite quickly at Frasers Ridge but when Lizzie caught sight of Roger, she alerted Ian and Jamie saying that he was the man who’d violated Bree.

There’s obviously no way Lizzie could have known — especially given that Bree wasn’t quite ready to talk about things just yet. But the misunderstanding had pretty catastrophic ends.

After Jamie gave poor Roger the beating of his life, Young Ian decided to trade him to the Mohawk in exchange for a few trinkets and Roger’s been traveling upstate with them as their prisoner ever since.

As if that weren’t enough, Claire thought it best not to let Jamie in on the fact that it was their old friend Bonnet who’d taken advantage of Bree so when the truth finally comes out, Jamie lets his rage get the better of him. The result is ugly to say the least.

When Jamie suggests that Bree might have lied about being raped, Bree snaps and slaps him across the face before revealing that she’d consented to Roger, but not to Bonnet.

As the episode goes on, it’s clear that it’s going to take more than Jamie apologizing to Bree for her to forgive his words in the heat of the moment. That being said, it’s clear Jamie isn’t giving up just yet.

After Young Ian reveals that he’d traded Roger to the Mohawks, Jamie promises to do everything in his power to bring Roger back to Brianna safely.

For a minute it seems like the whole family is gearing up to go on a good old fashioned road trip up north to save Roger from captivity. Claire, however, has the sense to convince Bree it’s not safe for her to travel so far in her condition.

In the end, it’s decided that Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian will set out to rescue Roger. Meanwhile, Murtagh will take both Bree and Lizzie to River Run where they’ll be safe under Aunt Jocasta’s care.

Their rescue efforts might be all for naught though. Just before the episode ends, we see Roger escape from captivity. As he’s running away from the Mohawk, he stumbles across another set of stones in in the woods.

He may have had it in his mind to return to Bree once he’d freed himself, but now that the universe has handed him an easy out, it looks as though we’ll have to wait and see with regards to whether or not he’ll take it and go back to his own time.

If he chooses to stay, there’s also the matter of whether or not he’ll run into the Frasers on his way back to Bree, or whether they’ll miss each other completely.

As for Bree and Lizzie, Murtagh has delivered them safely to River Run so it’ll be interesting to see how Bree gets on with Aunt Jocasta.

Jocasta wasn’t a huge fan of Claire’s and the pair butted heads the whole time we saw them on screen together at the beginning of the season, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Jocasta and Bree won’t get along.

Guess we’ll have to wait until next week to have some looming questions answered with regards to where the story goes from here!
