Kevin Hart is officially not hosting the 2019 Oscars, and for the first time in years, the biggest night in entertainment will air with no host.

The Oscars have been reinventing themselves with the addition of new categories, and now a shakeup to the show’s traditional format. And in an unplanned change, the Oscars will be airing without a host for the first time since 1989.

Initially, the show was meant to be hosted by Kevin Hart. However, when troubling homophobic comments were unearthed from the comedian’s past and he refused to apologize for the comments, he dropped out of the role.

Ellen Degeneres invited Hart onto her show to explain and defend himself with Degeneres acting as a sort of character witness for Hart. However, the appearance was met with a hearty amount of criticism, and Hart officially decided to move on from the possibility of hosting the Oscars.

As Variety reports, instead of trying to find another host for the show, they’ll be moving forward hostless. Producers of the show are working to secure A-list actors who will introduce the different segments of the show. Of course, this is a serious scramble for the team at the Oscars as the show is a mere six weeks away from its live television premiere.

Of course, there is still a slim possibility that some awesome celeb will step forward to be the host for the show. However, it’s much more likely for the show to go on without a host, and the show will rely on several short skits and bits to add the comedy to the awards show rather than the comedic talents of one individual.

Variety wasn’t able to get anyone from the Academy to comment on the format of this year’s show, so we’ll all have to wait until the live broadcast to see what is in store for us. With the new award categories and the unintentional format change, this year’s show will be one you don’t want to miss. The 2019 Oscars will air live on February 24 on ABC.
