Who was hot and who was not on the Oscars 2014 red carpet? The 2014 Academy Awards are over, but the fun has only just begun. Some stars shined brightly on the red carpet, and others were dim in comparison. Hypable writers Kristina Lintz and Marama Whyte turn their eyes to the best and worst of the Oscars red carpet.

With so many shining stars on one carpet, it is impossible to fit them all in – but here are some of our favorites (and least favorites). For more, see a complete list of Oscars 2014 winners and losers.

Amy Adams in Gucci

Kristina: Hit. It is hard to judge this dress based on a single photo, since this doesn’t adequately display the tiny peplum-esque flaps under her hands, but this was a very flattering dress – big surprise. I do wish she would have added a statement necklace or let her incredible hair down around her shoulders.

Marama: Hit. I am of the firm belief that Amy Adams can look good in anything, but that doesn’t diminish this as a fantastic look. The colour is bold and works wonderfully with her skin. This is sleek, sophisticated and lovely.

Anna Kendrick in J. Mendel

K: Miss. I’ll preface this by saying I love Anna Kendrick, but this dress just seemed disconnected and the back had a strange zig-zag pattern. She can do better.

M: Miss. I have to agree with Kristina, both on my love of Anna Kendrick and my dislike of this dress. The asymmetrical top interests me, but not even that spark of uniqueness can make up for whatever is going on with that red detailing.

Anne Hathaway in Gucci

K: Hit. I like this! She kind of looks like a part of the Epcot structure at Walt Disney World, but it’s so pretty and so simply stunning. She may not have been nominated for anything this year but she’s on my Best Dressed list.

M: Hit. I adore this. It is sci-fi meets medieval armour, and all kinds of fabulous. Hathaway makes fairly frequent use of this silhouette, and while she could shake things up, it suits her so well that I don’t mind. The tousled hair gives it a slight punk vibe, and her accessories match perfectly.

Benedict Cumberbatch

K: Hit. Yes, he looked drop dead handsome, but did you see how he really stole the show? And did you see how we were able to do some cool things in Photoshop because of it?

M: Hit. Surprising no one, Benedict Cumberbatch looks pretty damn fine in a sharply cut suit. We know it, he knows it.

Bradley Cooper in Tom Ford

K: Hit. This hair-do is much more preferable to his perm in American Hustle, that’s for sure. The suit is it a bit plain compared to what else we saw, but to be honest, could he pull off a white tux like Jared Leto? Maybe not.

M: Hit. It’s hard to go wrong with a well cut suit. That said, the jacket looks slightly pinched. But it’s Bradley Cooper, and he somehow makes the beard work, so I’ll let it pass.

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive

K: Hit. Oh, Cate. I feel like your dresses always need time to grow on me. It wasn’t until I saw her on stage that I fell for this dress.

M: Hit. Maybe it is the Australian in me, but Cate always looks flawless and I won’t listen to anyone who says otherwise. Nude colours can be difficult to pull off, but not for Cate. The detailing is intricate and beautiful and the styling compliments the dress perfectly. And if I haven’t mentioned it, I really just love Cate Blanchett.

Charlize Theron in Dior

K: Hit. This may be my favorite look of the night. She’s wearing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace and a Dior dress, and she is absolutely owning it.

M: Miss. The only thing I like about this look is the sheer detail where Theron’s mermaid train is connected. The bizarre “invisible” straps make her looks oddly proportioned, and the necklace looks cheap (ironically, as it is clearly incredibly valuable). The mermaid silhouette might be a favourite, but for me, this is a total flop.

Emma Watson in Vera Wang

K: Hit. I’m loving the charcoal – it’s not black but it’s not glittery. I do wish her hair was a bit more styled or she accented the dress with some drop earrings or bangles, but she looks gorgeous anyway you cut it.

M: Hit. As Beyoncé would say, ***Flawless. This deceptively simple dress glimmered and glistened in all the right ways, and Watson put together the perfect styling to accompany it. She looked glam and grown-up, pulling off a dress that many of her peers would have be scared to attempt.

More: Jennifer Lawrence, Kerry Washington and Jared Leto

Jared Leto in Saint Laurent

K: Hit. Jared Leto’s hair absolutely owned the red carpet. Men and women alike seem to be in envy of this musician/Oscar winner’s amazing mane. Beyond that, I love the white tux despite critics comparing him to a waiter for the night. The red bow tie was just the right accessory to top off the look.

M: Hit. Ellen was not wrong when she said Jared Leto was the prettiest person at the Oscars. Part of me wants to hate him, because his hair always looks better than mine. But his suit is so well tailored, and the pop of colour on his bow tie is perfect, and he brought his mum as his date, so I have to love him.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior

K: Hit. This is so much better than the dress she wore earlier in the season that could be easily replicated with a sheet and some black belts. I love the backwards necklace and of course, that red dress. If you know me, you know a red structured dress like that is my kryptonite. Her hair was fine for what it is – as it grows out again I expect we can see more back-swept looks like this.

M: Hit. Poor Jennifer Lawrence might have bad luck remaining upright at awards shows, but girl can put a look together. The colour popped out immediately, and it is so perfectly tailored for her figure. The miniature peplums add interest, and I love that she has kept the styling simple. If only Katniss could see her now.

Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta

K: Hit. It’s so sparkly and pretty! It doesn’t hang like a ill-fitting fringe dress but rather looks more demure than I’d expect. But where was Ben?

M: Hit. So there is the possibility that someone might mistaken her for a chandelier, or an extra on The Great Gatsby, but I adore this. The dress is glamourous, flirty and fun, and she has cleverly kept the hair and makeup nice and simple.

Julia Roberts in Givenchy Couture

K: Miss. The strange black lace just wasn’t working for me. It wasn’t to the standards we’ve seen from her in the past, but then again, she did have the confusing black/white thing at the Golden Globes – she just isn’t having winning award seasons style.

M: Miss. It pains me to criticise Julia Roberts, so I’ll keep my criticisms to the dress. In particular, the lace detailing on the top looks like an attempt as a high class modesty panel, while the peplum just confuses the rest of the dress.

Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace

K: Hit. I love it. I love that it has the intention of being a cap dress at her shoulders but doesn’t completely go there.

M: Hit. I love this dress from the front, I don’t mind it from the back. This looks like Hudson’s attempt at an American Hustle costume, and it looks fantastic on her. She is sleek, unique, and sexy.

Kelly Osbourne in Badgley Mischka

K: Hit. I saw this on the runway a season or so ago and went insane for it then, and I was going bonkers for it here. This was one of her two dresses tonight but I wish she simply stayed in this the entire time. The dress looks phenomenal on her and the golden overlay at the top is just enough to make this not look like a wedding dress.

M: Hit. First, I’ll admit that I miss Osbourne’s fabulously bold purple hair from the Grammys, as it seems somewhat diluted here. The dress is still fabulous and very fresh, the silhouette is simple and the detailed top keeps it interesting.

Kerry Washington in Jason Wu

K: Miss. Olivia Wilde went for a form-fitting black gown to accentuate her baby bump and while I’m not saying Kerry is trying to hid it, this eggplant, ill-fitting dress is a very unfavorable look for me. I look forward to seeing more creme, white, and grey coats and peplums from her on Scandal as they try to hide her growing bump. (Unless they work it into the show, but at this point that seems unlikely.)

M: Hit. I am so torn, because I adore Kerry Washington. Again, she looks amazing regardless of what she wears – but she could have chosen something more exciting than this. Ordinarily this would be a miss, because the dress is so incredibly dull, but her hair and makeup are glorious and she is absolutely glowing. So she gets the hit for looking amazing, regardless of what I think of her outfit.

More: Leonardo DiCaprio, Lupita Nyong’o and Kristen Bell

Kevin Spacey in Burberry

K: Hit. He did not beat around the bush wearing a blue. Unlike Leo’s so-dark-it-look-black tux, this is such a gorgeous blue hue that should have all men looking to stock up on one similar to it for next season.

M: Hit. Even outside of my House of Cards obsession, there is something about Kevin Spacey. The man can wear a suit. I salute him for his bold colour choice, his bow tie, and his swagger.

Kristen Bell in Roberto Cavalli

K: Hit. She did say she picked this dress because of the distinct Frozen vibe it gave her, and we cannot disagree. The pattern is reminiscent of swirling snow and knowing our favorite Marshmallow had a burrito in her clutch makes this entire outfit that much better.

M: Hit. I wonder if Kristen Bell was trying to sway the Academy with her Frozen-esque dress. Still, everyone likes a themed outfit. The dress is gorgeous and Bell looks gorgeous in it – everyone is a winner.

Leonardo DiCaprio in Armani

K: Hit. Images couldn’t do it justice but if you watched the red carpet, you’d know this was not a plain black tux. He just looks so demure. I wish he won.

M: Miss. I can hear the internet yelling at me already, but can someone please tell Leo that he is not Jack Nicholson? It’s time for a new hairstyle. Shake things up, Leo.

Liza Minnelli in Halston

K: Miss. I don’t like pant suits that much and I like them even less when they’re this violently blue and silky.

M: Hit. Liza can wear anything that she likes and it will be a winner. Although, this would not be a hit on anyone but Liza. And even if a bright blue, draped, off-the-shoulder pantsuit isn’t your thing, surely we can all appreciate Liza’s dedication to a look, as seen in that blue hair streak.

Lupita Nyong’o in Prada

K: Hit. I don’t even know where to begin. Every time I see this, I just yell “LUPITA” because she is so freaking gorgeous. We all have seen her dominate the red carpet this season and I think she’s going out on top. I’m also coveting her earrings, hard-core. My one critique about this is that it is maybe too low cut? No – nope – this is perfect.

M: Hit. This might be my favourite dress of the night. Lupita Nyong’o has been absolutely knocking it out of the park this awards season, and this dress is no exception. Her choice of colour is sensational with her skin, and the simplicity of the silhouette lets Lupita shine.

Portia De Rossi in Naeem Khan

K: Miss. It looks pleasant enough, but why wear this strange geometric cut-out/crocheted number? Her waist is just begging for a statement belt.

M: Miss. I can’t quite explain why I don’t like this dress. Portia De Rossi looks striking, and the cutaway gown is a marvel of design. But the overall effect is too casual for me, and I would have liked to see her in color.

Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen

K: Hit. To me there is almost too much fabric at the train, but the body of this dress does wonders for the overall look. I think her hair nicely balances the knot at her hip and overall, it’s a very sophisticated look.

M: Miss. I like everything about this look except for the fabric, and unfortunately there is so much fabric here that that makes all the difference. I like the glamourous hair, the silhouette, the understated jewelry. But the fabric is so shiny that I can look at nothing else, and it makes all of the draping far too prominent.
