Today The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 10 films that may be nominated in the Visual Effects category at the 85th Academy Awards.

The films are as follows:

The Amazing Spider-Man
Cloud Atlas
The Dark Knight Rises
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
John Carter
Life of Pi
The Avengers
Prometheus
Skyfall
Show White and the Huntsman

The only film in the list above which hasn’t been released yet is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Other than Peter Jackson’s soon-to-be-released film, which do you think deserve to make the top five list? Are there any films released this year you think got snubbed? One film in particular our visitors may notice is missing is The Hunger Games, which employed a good amount of special effects but perhaps didn’t offer enough “wow” (Girl on Fire scene, anybody?) to push the film into Oscar-winning territory. Other films we think are missing? The Impossible, Flight, Looper, and Men in Black III.

Academy members will be able view 10 minutes of footage from each of the above films and then vote on January 3 to narrow the list down to five contenders.

The 2013 Oscar nominations will be announced Thursday, January 10. The 85th Annual Academy Award ceremony will be held Sunday, February 24 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood and broadcast live on ABC.
