The 2013 Oscars just finished airing, with Argo picking up top honors for Best Picture in a year that brought several surprises.

Jennifer Lawrence continued her strong awards season by taking home Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook. Daniel Day-Lewis, meanwhile, took home the Best Actor award for his tremendous performance in Lincoln. Starting off the evening with a toss-up category, Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Django Unchained, marking the second straight Quentin Tarantino film for which he’s won. Anne Hathaway ran away with the award for Best Supporting Actress for Les Miserables.

In the Best Director category, Ang Lee took home the honors for Life of Pi in a small surprise. Quentin Tarantino picked up his second Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Django Unchained, while Chris Terrio won for Best Adapted Screenplay for Argo, which also took home Best Film Editing.

In an unprecedented turn of events, there was a tie in Sound Editing, with both Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall picking up Oscars. The last time that occurred was 19 years ago in the Short Film category, and we don’t think anyone was ready for that this year. Les Miserables won the award for Sound Mixing, thanks to the much-promoted use of live singing.

Brave topped the Best Animated Feature category, as director Mark Andrews arrived on stage to accept the award in a kilt, while Searching For Sugar Man was honored with the Best Documentary Feature award. Best Picture nominee Amour was awarded Best Foreign Language Film.

Life of Pi picked up four awards, including Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography. Les Miserables won for Makeup and Hairstyling while Anna Karenina took home the Best Costumes award. Lincoln picked up the Best Production Design award, which also honors set decoration.

Adele and Paul Epworth took home the Best Original Song award in what was a no-contest, to be sure, for “Skyfall” from Skyfall, while Mychael Danna won for Best Original Score for Life of Pi. In the shorts categories, Paperman won for Best Animated Short, Curfew took home Best Live Action Short and Inocente was awarded Best Documentary Short.
