The 2015 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and while most of the nominees were expected, there were a few surprising nominations, with a couple of films being snubbed altogether.

Each year it’s always exciting to wake up and find out who the Academy has nominated for Oscars, but there’s almost always a few surprises thrown in, as well as a few movies which audiences feel are snubbed.

The Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman lead with nine Oscar nominations each, followed by eight for The Imitation Game, with American Sniper and Boyhood taking in six each. Check out the biggest snubs and surprises below:

Snub: ‘The Lego Movie’

One of the biggest snubs has to be The Lego Movie grabbing a nomination for Best Song, but not for Best Animated Feature Film. Not only was The Lego Movie a monster success at the box office, but it had nearly every critic singing “Everything Is Awesome” as they walked out of the theater. It was globally well-liked, and it’s very surprising that the film didn’t even get a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.

Snub: ‘Gone Girl’

David Fincher’s Gone Girl was snubbed in multiple categories, as it only ended up with one nomination for actress Rosamund Pike. For whatever reason, the Academy wasn’t too fond of Gone Girl, despite positive reviews and being one of this year’s best films. At least first time Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike got in for Best Actress, but she’ll be hard pressed to win against Julianne Moore’s performance in Still Alice.

Snub: Ava DuVernay – ‘Selma’

While many hoped that the Academy would make history by nominating the first African American female director for her well-received civil rights film, Selma, the Academy left her out of the nominations. It was a tough year for directors this year with so many great films, but many felt DuVernay deserved a nomination.

Snub: ‘Foxcatcher’

Foxcatcher received five nominations, which included Best Actor for Steve Carell, Supporting for Mark Ruffalo, and Director for Bennett Miller, but the film didn’t grab a Best Picture nomination. This dark drama was excellent, and many felt there was room for it to be included in the Best Picture category.

Snub: Kim Dickens – ‘Gone Girl’

Kim Dickens portrayed the detective who wasn’t willing to take anything but the absolute truth in Gone Girl, and the actress put in one of the best supporting performances of the year. While she didn’t receive nominations in other award shows this year, she gave one of the stand-out performances of the year in David Fincher’s twisted drama.

Snub: ‘Life Itself’

The documentary which told the story of beloved film critic, Roger Ebert, was left out of the Best Documentary nominations. Most expected it to easily make the list, and possibly win due to the critic’s many friends in the Academy, but it surprisingly didn’t even make the cut for top five.

Surprise: Marion Cotillard – ‘Two Days, One Night’

Due to the fact that Marion Cotillard’s film Two Days, One Night didn’t get a wide release, many were concerned that her performance would go unnoticed. That wasn’t the case, as she’s been nominated for Best Actress. Cotillard gave another great performance in The Immigrant this year, which many thought would hurt her chances of getting a nomination, but now she’ll be headed to the Oscars.

Surprise: Bradley Cooper – ‘American Sniper’

Despite American Sniper’s mixed reviews, Bradley Cooper received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. While Cooper’s performance received some of the best reviews of his career, during a year stuffed with great performances, it’s still surprising that he made it in due to the fact that he didn’t receive a nomination at the Globes. This will be Bradley Cooper’s third Academy Award nomination, and once again he’s up against some other incredible performances.

Surprise: Lead acting contenders are all white

In a year with multiple great performances, it’s incredibly surprising that all the lead acting contenders are white this year. It’s actually only the second time in 20 years that this has occurred, and is surprising considering the positive pattern we’ve seen over the last few years, including a stellar performance from David Oyelowo in this year’s civil rights film, Selma.

There were a few other snubs and surprises at the 2015 Oscar nominations, so be sure to let us know which films and performances you felt were left out of the Oscar race this year.
