In the first season of Orphan Black, characters and clones bit the dust faster than we could say, “Just one, I’m a few. No family too. Who am I?” But now it seems the stakes need to be raised again.

When Orphan Black ended its second season, we all thought Rachel Duncan could be the one to bite the dust. She did get a pencil in the eye, after all. The producers were clever to tease her fate until right before season 3 started, which had the entire fandom trembling in fear to see if the Pro clone would still be up for a fight this year. But then they announced that she is, indeed, alive and will be a part of the third season much to our dismay.

Don’t get us wrong, we absolutely love having Rachel on the show — especially since this season gave us a real reason to not only hate her but also feel bad for her. But her death would have truly raised the stakes for the girls in Project Leda.

And yes, we have to specify that the stakes need to be raised for the Leda clones in particular. The Castor clones, while deadly and unnerving, have so far met the same fate as several Leda clones in season 1: They’re dropping off like flies. It’s apparently easier for Castor clones to die off than Leda ones, and the stakes are high enough for them.

It may just be our obsession with character death here (read: Kyle’s obsession) but in a world where clones are either getting killed or just expiring on their own, it seems unlikely that any of the five main ladies will be unaffected for so long. With so many assassination attempts and such a big health defect affecting so many other clones, frankly we’re surprised that they all survived this long.

Do we want Cosima, Alison, Sarah, Helena or Rachel to die? No. Okay, well, yes. But does that mean we’re going to enjoy it when and if any of them do? Definitely not! It’s just a move that the show has to make in order to maintain a sense of realism — if you can get any of that in a sci-fi show about human cloning.

We’re happy that we’ve been able to see all of the clones survive this long — it has let us connect with each and every one of them, and now we care about their story arcs. In the world of storytelling, though, that means it’s the perfect time to kill one of them off and have the entire fandom bawling their eyes out. Had they killed any of the clones at the end of the first season, we wouldn’t have known and/or cared for them nearly as much as we do now, and it’s about time that Orphan Black gives us another shock this season.

In comparison to the last two seasons, Orphan Black season 3 has been surprisingly lacking a lot of huge cliffhangers or “wow” moments. Remember when you were watching season 1 and literally every episode had you gasping and wanting to catch the next? That’s how Orphan Black got so huge! We need more of that! And what better way to do that than to kill off a character before the season finale in a couple weeks?

You might be saying that if we wanted more character death we should be watching shows like Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, but we don’t want it just for the shock factor — we want it because it would dramatically affect the story.

It’s not just about killing a character off for fun, it’s about propelling the story further and making the other characters realize just how dangerous of a situation they’re in. Alison, for example, is so completely unaware of the dangers of being a clone that she willingly put her family in danger by partnering with drug dealers and the like. If Alison Hendrix thinks it’s less dangerous to deal drugs than it is to be a clone in an illegal human cloning experiment that has full and total control of your life and everyone around you, then you know it’s about time for her to get a wake up call.

We don’t want characters to die just because; we want want it because it means no one is safe and it’ll make us even more concerned for the clones than we already are. But hey, you might disagree.

Do you want anyone on ‘Orphan Black’ to die?

If you agree and think it’s time one of the main ladies gets killed off, then let us know! And if you’d rather all the clones live a happy, utopian ever-after then tell us about that too!
