Disney’s The Lion King remake may be dominating at the box office, but there’s one group of individuals who aren’t into the new ‘live-action’ trend.

So who’s been left with a bitter taste in their mouths over the new reality of CGI Simba, Nala, and more? It turns out, it’s none other than a slew of original animators who worked on the ’90s Disney classic.

In a brand new feature posted on Wednesday (July 31), The Huffington Post revealed that they’d reached out to 13 different artists who worked on Disney’s 1994 animated Lion King.

Though some were wary about going on the record, stating that they could get in trouble for voicing opinions on director Jon Favreau’s ‘live-action’ take, one animator named David Stephan did decide to speak up.

Stephan, who worked on the 1994 film’s “Circle of Life” sequence and additionally contributed to the hyenas’ design, stated in his interview that he believes the majority of the animators who worked on the original are likely unhappy with the remake.

“If you polled the crew of the original Lion King, most of them would say, ‘Why? Did you really have to do that?’ It kind of hurts,” said Stephan.

The question of ‘why did we need this?’ is likely one that will resonate with Disney fans who may be suffering from live-action fatigue. That being said, Stephan didn’t stop there.

In addition, Stephan along with a few fellow animators who went on the record, pointed out that it feels like a bit of a cash grab.

“It’s sort of sad that the stockholder is now in the room deciding what movies get made,” continued Stephan. “Disney’s now taken the cover off, and it’s now in your face: ‘Yeah, we just want to make money.’ that’s disappointing as an artist, from a studio that was founded on originality and art.”

Though some may share in Stephan’s sentiments, it’s important to point out that it’s not all doom and gloom.

Fellow animator Dave Bossert, who worked on visual effects for the animated Lion King, likened the new live-action trend to what Walt Disney originally did: “reuse and recycle great stories,” citing Peter Pan, Alice and Wonderland, and Cinderella, to name few.

“The fact is, they’re taking these great stories and they’re creating them in different entertainment arenas.”

Regardless of how you felt about Disney’s new Lion King, it’s interesting to hear about what some of the crew who worked on the original had to say.
