Actress Laverne Cox, best known for her role on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, has announced a memoir due to be published next year.

Cox plays transgender prison inmate Sophia Burset on the beloved show based on the book of the same name by Piper Kerman.

The actress is transgender as well, and in a statement, she talks about the purpose of her memoir: “By sharing my full, unvarnished story, including details of my life and family history I have never before revealed, I hope to provide a voice and safe place for those who have suffered because of their race, class, gender, abuse, violence and trauma.”

The publisher, Toronto’s Harlequin, says that the book will start with her childhood in Alabama where she was raised by her mother as a boy with a twin brother.

They said in a statement, “The editors at Harlequin Nonfiction aggressively pursued Cox to write a book. They met with her and were awed by her story, her writing and her devotion to the LGBT community. Editor Rebecca Hunt won the book in a heated auction from agent Kent Wolf at Lippincott Massie McQuilkin for a six-figure deal.”

Orange is the New Black season 2 is currently filming and should be wrapping in the coming weeks (at least two actors finished shooting this week). A premiere date is not yet known but is expected around the middle of this year.
