Do you see Orange Is the New Black as a comedy or a drama? Netflix has decided it will compete against other television hits in the latter.

TV Line has learned that Netflix will submit the Jenji Kohan created dramedy as a drama at this year’s upcoming Golden Globes and Emmys. They were initially set on submitting it as a comedy but changed their mind for an unknown reason.

The move is interesting on multiple levels, but perhaps the most thought-provoking question is why Netflix would put it up against its other popular and original drama House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.

Cards aside, Orange Is the New Black will now have to compete against other big shows like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and others who are already well established and slightly better known. In other words, OITNB has a slim chance of winning. Perhaps Netflix thinks that a surprising debut entry will gain the attention of voters and help sway votes.

In related news, on Tuesday we learned that Laura Prepon will be returning to Orange Is the New Black season 2 for four episodes. The information came as a relief because initial reports suggested she’d only be back for one episode to send off her character. She’s reportedly now in talks for season 3, but it remains to be seen just how involved she will be in the long run.

Do you think ‘OITNB’ has a better shot as a drama or comedy?

The 2014 Golden Globes will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Sunday, January 12 on NBC. The 2014 Emmys will take place Sunday, August 24.
