The spirit of empowerment and change was heavy in the air at the 75th Golden Globes. With everybody sporting stunning black attire to stand in solidarity with sexual assault victims, Time’s Up pins gracing countless lapels, and the message of the #MeToo movement being spread, the room was full with the possibility for a better tomorrow.

All that was needed was one moment to really sum up the whole experience. One thing to tie everything together, and create a take-hone message of the night.

That moment was achieved when Oprah Winfrey stepped up to the mic to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. She used her time in the spotlight to deliver the most inspirational speech of the evening.

She began by recounting how she felt watching Sidney Poitier win the same award in 1982, and how much that moment meant to her. She followed by expressing her delight that some young black girls might feel the same, watching her receive the award.

She called attention to both the “Time’s Up” initiative and the #MeToo movement, and made it clear that the problem wasn’t just in the entertainment industry. She received roaring applause from the audience when she expressed “gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue.”

Oprah went on to say, “For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men. But their time is up.”

The speech perfectly encompassed the tone of the 75th Golden Globes, and you can listen to the entire thing on Spotify now!
