A new Once Upon a Time In Wonderland interview featuring Sophie Lowe has surfaced online and in it, the actress describes what makes this version of Wonderland different from the story we all grew up with.

In this clip, originally found on Huffington Post, we get a look at the world that Alice flees and the fantasy realm she escapes to. From the description of the pilot episode released last week, we know that Alice’s father believes her to be insane. The clip offers glimpses into the dark grey asylum, painting the dreary world Alice finds herself in at the start of the series. In contrast the Wonderland landscapes are certainly more colorful, but still contain a fair amount of evil presences.

Once Upon a Time In Wonderland takes place when Alice returns to Wonderland as an adult. This presents an opportunity for more adult themes to run through the series. Even the costumes in this spinoff series seem to be more suited for a prime-time audience. The evil Red Queen for one, seems to have escaped the child friendly wardrobe many of us might remember from the classic Disney film. Mixing up the fantastic world further, Jafar makes an appearance aiding the Red Queen in her pursuit against Alice.

Lowe describes the grown-up Alice as a “bad ass” character who wields a sword with the Queen’s name on it. But Alice is not the only character with a bit of an awesome upgrade. The White Rabbit appears to have the power to create portal holes to Wonderland out of an ordinary brick wall. We are stepping into an entirely new Wonderland.

Finally, the new Once Upon A Time In Wonderland clip gives us some insight into an alliance between Alice and the Knave of Hearts. In the new footage, we overhear Alice mention that she helped him get back his heart and now the Knave of Hearts must repay her by going after Cyrus.

What do you think of the new glimpses into adult Wonderland?

Once Upon a Time In Wonderland premiers Thursday, October 10 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
