Sinqua Walls, who will be playing Lancelot in Once Upon a Time‘s second season, gave an interview with TV Fanatic where he talked about his character, training to use a sword, and what it was like on set.

We already know that Sir Lancelet will be a “sword for hire with nothing to lose,” but Walls also describes him as an interesting and dangerous — yet fun — man. The actor thinks that fans will like the character and want to know more about him.

Speaking of a sword for hire, Walls talked a little bit about the sword training that he received in order to take on the role. He noted that, “it was really great because Josh Dallas, who plays Charming on the show, he has a lot of sword training as well. So just from like working with him and watching him I learned a lot of how to be effortless with the sword.” He said he also received horseback riding training all in order to “know the nuances of how a knight in shining armor rides.”

When asked how many episodes he’d be in, he said he wasn’t sure, but that it was definitely going to be more than one. In a previous interview with the creators of the show, we learned that he’d be in at least three. He also mentioned the various characters he’s been interacting with, including Snow White, Prince Charming, Emma, Henry, the Evil Queen, and Mulan.

In addition, the actor talked about his preparations for getting into character before he starts shooting. He likes to do research in order to better understand the person he will be portraying, as well as sit down with the writers and directors. He says, “for me, just being prepared has always been the easiest way for me to make the transition.”

He also talks about how much he enjoyed being on Once, saying, “I had a lot of fun working on Once because there were just so many different nuances. I really like how they’re bringing the old fairy tale characters into present day. Then seeing how those alter egos are evolving, like who would this person be if they weren’t Snow White but who would they be if they were really a present day person. The dynamic for that. That’s been a lot of fun.”

He also teases that Lancelot is going to be a memorable character!
