Read the description of the upcoming Once Upon a Time season 2 episode “The Doctor,” in which Regina struggles with her magic. (Updated with a longer description.)

The official description of the fifth episode of season 2, “The Doctor,” has been released by ABC. It reads:

As Regina tries to refrain from using her magic in order to regain Henry’s trust, she starts seeing a ghost from her past; Mary Margaret and Emma find a survivor from an Ogre massacre; Regina struggles to learn the dark arts.

Obviously, the title begs the question: is this the episode in which we’ll finally learn the identity of Doctor Whale? Or is there perhaps another doctor in town, say, the mysterious character played by Michael Raymond-James?

As for Regina seeing a ghost from her past, this could be anybody! But as this is most likely a Regina flashback episode, chances are it’ll be someone from her early life, back when she was still learning magic.

In this episode Mary Margaret and Emma are still in fairytale land, and it seems like they are traveling or exploring the land. We wonder if this ogre massacre happened recently, or if it could perhaps somehow be related to Rumpelstiltskin’s past, and maybe reveal more about his son and wife?

This Sunday’s episode, “We Are Both,” also centers on Regina. Barbara Hershey returns as her mother Cora, and we’ll learn how Regina first met Rumpelstiltskin and started learning magic. Check out a promo, and read our review of the premiere episode “Broken.”

And don’t forget to listen to Hypable’s Once Upon a Time podcast Onceable, in which we will be rehashing the season 2 premiere, and every episode of the second season as they air!

Are you excited to learn more about Regina’s past, and to see Emma and Snow White on new fairytale land adventures?

Edit: A longer press release has now been released by ABC:

REGINA BELIEVES SHE’S SEEN A GHOST FROM HER PAST IN STORYBROOKE, MARY MARGARET AND EMMA BECOME SUSPICIOUS OF A LONE SURVIVOR FROM AN OGRE MASSACRE, AND REGINA FINDS HERSELF FAILING AT LEARNING THE DARK ARTS FROM A DARK MASTER, ON ABC’S “ONCE UPON A TIME”

“The Doctor” – While Regina continues to try and stop using her magic in an attempt to win back Henry’s affections, she begins seeing what she believes is a ghost from her past; and when Mary Margaret and Emma discover a lone survivor from an ogre massacre, Emma begins to question whether or not he’s telling the truth.
