Once Upon a Time‘s second episode of season 2 will delve into Regina’s backstory as the Storybrooke residents reel from the lifting of the curse. Read what Lana Parrilla can tease about the Evil Queen’s next move.

In the first episode of season 2, Regina regained her magical abilities – but not before being touched by Emma’s, whose residual love magic (presumably coming from her parents’ true love) seemed to fuel her back into action.

Now, Regina is back in full force and ready to terrorise the residents of Storybrooke once again – though she’ll also be struggling to get back her son Henry, who is currently staying with David “Gramps” Nolan.

Speaking to TV Line, Lana Parrilla speaks about the change in Regina now that she doesn’t have the advantage of being one of the few people in Storybrooke who knows the truth, saying, “You’re going to experience a much more vulnerable, exposed Regina. She starts to become very honest about who she is and the things that she’s afraid of and what she wants.” As a result, Regina “starts to confront herself and her inner demons in ways I don’t think she ever has.”

And what about Emma and Snow, who Regina accidentally sent back to fairytale land? “There are mixed emotions,” Parrilla allows. “For one, she somewhat feels guilty, because that wasn’t her intention. Secondly, it’s almost kind of like a tiny, tiny celebration, because she’s been trying to get rid of these two women for so long!”

She also reflects on Regina, and maybe hints at a chance at redemption for the Evil (emphasis on evil) Queen, saying, “I think Regina is a really good person, at the core of her being, but circumstances changed her over the years.”

Parrilla also talks about whether there’ll be a showdown between Rumpelstiltskin and Regina, and so far, they haven’t really confronted each other about him sending the wraith after her, and her locking away Belle.

“There is so much that is unspoken between these two characters,” Parrilla says, previewing Sunday’s episode “We Are Both” (in which we see a flashback to Regina and Rumpel’s first meeting). “Regina goes to talk to Mr. Gold — she needs something from him – but she never mentions the wraith,” Parrila reveals. “There is no dialogue about it. To me that indicates that either these two can never really kill each other and these are just threats, or they don’t talk about it because they’re just always going to try to trump one another.”
