More details are emerging about the Once Upon a Time spinoff centered on Alice in Wonderland, as we learn what writers will be helming the project.

Deadline has learned that the Wonderland spinoff created by Once Upon a Time‘s showrunners Ed Kitsis and Adam Horowitz will bring Once staff writer Jane Espenson on board, along with Prison Break alum Zack Estrin.

The current plan is to air a 13-episode season, which could fill in Once Upon a Time‘s summer and winter hiatuses. So if the spinoff is picked up, that could in theory mean at least one full year of almost uninterrupted Once!

In terms of the plot, it looks like the main character will be Alice. When the spinoff idea was first kicked around, there was talk of the show focusing on the Mad Hatter, however, Sebastian Stan was not available to reprise his role, and the producers weren’t interested in recasting his character.

Last week, casting calls went out for two other lead roles: the exotic and handsome Amahl (speculated to be Aladdin) and The Knave, a character who appears in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

“The spinoff takes place in a post-curse world,” Deadline writes, and “like on Once, there will be flashbacks, so we could potentially see familiar faces.” One obvious candidate is Barbara Hershey’s Cora, of course, who moonlighted as the Queen of Hearts for an unspecified number of years.

Are you excited for this Once Upon a Time spinoff? What do you think Wonderland is like now, after the curse hit fairytale land?
