Once Upon a Time‘s Mad Hatter (Sebastian Stan) is a fan-favorite character on the show, and now he might be getting his own spin-off!

Deadline reports that ABC is thinking about giving the Mad Hatter his own Once Upon a Time spin-off show. This is unsurprising given how much fans of Once Upon a Time love the character. A spin-off show would probably fair pretty well. The same article states that the Mad Hatter will be coming in again late in season 2. If all goes well, and his arc is well received, ABC will consider a spin-off show centered on the character.

However, the catch here is that Sebastian Stan may not be the one to fill the role. Unfortunately, it looks like he is unavailable for the spin-off, which would require a multi-year contract that he can’t commit to.

So, what’s ABC’s solution? It looks like they may recast the role. Deadline says, “The new Mad Hatter would be cast as guest star with a series option behind it,” which sounds like it’s a possibility that not only would a new actor be featured in the spin-off, but that he may replace Stan as a guest star on Once Upon a Time.

There’s no information yet as to what world the Once Upon a Time spin-off will take place in. It’s possible that it could be in Fairytale Land, perhaps specifically Wonderland, before the Mad Hatter and his daughter were transported to Storybrooke. Another option could be a story centered around their lives in Storybrooke, or even outside Storybrooke, if they can figure out how to leave the town without losing their memories. Or, perhaps, it’ll chronicle their lives after Storybrooke as they start anew back in their old world.

It’s not that surprising that ABC is looking to capitalize on the fan-favorite character, especially given the fact that NBC has a new pilot in the works titled Wonderland. The description, from Deadline, reads:

Wonderland is set years after the events in the book and centers on Alice and a new character, Clara. Seven years ago, Clara’s life took an unexplained turn for the worse, and a mysterious stranger tells her there may be an explanation after all… an explanation that lies in the fantastical world of Wonderland. To revive her dreams and get her life back on track, Clara must wage war against Wonderland’s reigning Queen, the woman we once knew as Alice.

What do you think about the possibility of the Mad Hatter being recast? Do you think you’ll be tuning into a Once Upon a Time spin-off show?
