Once Upon a Time season 6, episode 7 awards the top honor of villain of the week to the person who gave their all to the dark side.

Once Upon a Time‘s villains are some of the series’ best characters. The MVPs include the Evil Queen, Cora, Rumpel, Maleficent, Cruella and plenty more. It’s time we honor their contributions to the show. After all, where would we be without them?

Each week, we will run a poll where you can cast a vote for your favorite villain of the week! This introductory post is here to reveal what we are looking for in our masters of darkness.

And the winner is…

The Evil Queen runs away with the Villain of the Week honor for Once Upon a Time season 6, episode 7. Her longstanding grudge with Snow White finally came to a head and she stood victorious with revenge literally in the palm of her hands.

After years of suffering the Evil Queen’s desire to see Snow’s heart disappear into a pile of dust seems too easy. Instead, she decides to give Snow a chance to walk in her fabulous shoes.

Snow can live, but she must live without David. For whenever Snow is awake, David will be under a sleeping curse and vice versa.

Best Interaction with a Hero

The cold open in “Heartless” is not only one the best hero villain interactions of the show, but perhaps one of the best scenes in the show. It set the stage for the upcoming arc that will lead Once Upon a Time into the season 6 hiatus. The series’ reliance on rehashing old grudges tends to drag the show down.

That is not the case here.

The Evil Queen revitalizes the battle, reinvigorates the need for her presence on the show, and, best of all, sets a threat in motion.

Top 3 Evil Actions

  1. Casting a sleeping curse on Snow and David’s shared heart
  2. Making out with Mr. Gold
  3. Crushing the sappling before we truly knew its purpose

Question of the week: Is there room for forgiveness?

On the surface condemning true love to live without one another seems unforgiveable. But the Evil Queen does have motivation. She is not evil for the sake of being evil. Her separation from Regina is meant to have us believe that she is the embodiment of pure evil.

However, she and Regina both have bits of the other left inside of them. Regina is not entirely rid of the pull towards the easier, darker ways of her magic. She is able to recognize and sympathize with the pain of abandonment and loneliness she carried around for so long. Regina never got rid of the pain entirely, Hyde’s serum just turned the volume down.

As the Evil Queen stands defiant and eager to enact her revenge, Regina flinches at the memory of her past self. If Regina can never be truly free of her past, would we be able to forgive these actions when she is whole again?

It’s an interesting predicament and one that highlights what exists inside every one of the characters on Once. If we separated anyone else from their worst self, could we forgive their actions?

After all, everyone seems to be alright forgiving and forgetting the actions of the Dark Swan.

Honorable Mention:

Tip of the hat to the woodsman. Master of the axe, drugger of the innocent bystander, and owner of a terrifying mask, we salute your efforts to serve the side of evil.

Let us know what you think of the Evil Queen and check back each week to vote for your favorite villain!
