Once Upon a Time season 5 will introduce their first Pixar character, the fiery red head archer, Merida. But will she help or hinder Emma’s search for Merlin?
Merida and Emma are both on a journey to set a few wrongs right when Once Upon a Time season 5 premieres this Sunday. The episode will find Merida and Emma in the Enchanted Forest looking for the same magical creature that may offer a solution to their problems — the wisps.

It looks like Emma’s quest to find Merlin is not without its obstacles. Creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis hinted over the summer that Merida’s story would pick up after the events of Brave. In the clip Merida hints that things are not going too well in her kingdom and that she needs the help of the wisps to set things right for her family. (We doubt that bears are involved again in this scenario!)
Emma, on the other hand, makes a compelling case of her own. Alone in the Enchanted Forest with more magic than she knows how to control, she needs the wisps to find a way to put an end to it all.
So who should have it?
Kitsis has high hopes for fans of the seires to welcome Merida with open arms. “If she’s not your favorite new character this year, I won’t know what to say. She’s a lot of fun,” said Kitsis earlier this summer. From the looks of her entrance, we trust he may be right!
Once Upon a Time season 5, episode 1, “Dark Swan,” premieres Sunday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
