Once Upon a Time announced yesterday at Comic-Con that Merida is making her way to the Enchanted Forest universe. But how will she fit in?

In 10th century Scotland, a fiercely independent lass named Merida challenges the expectations of her land and embarks on a mission to save her family. She is no stranger to fighting for her family, challenging the status quo, and archery skills that could put Robin Hood in his place. And now she is heading to Once Upon a Time!

Comic-Con was able to pull off the ultimate surprise by adding actress Amy Manson to their season 5 roster around the time of announcing that they were looking for an actress to play the role of Rumple’s mother. But creators Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis want to be clear, Merida is not Rumple’s mother.

Watch Merida’s reveal from Comic Con here.

At roundtable interviews Hypable found out how Merida will play into the story saying. “We’re going to meet her through Emma,” said showrunners.

What will this entail? We have some theories.

1. The Will O’ the Whisps will play a large role this season

The bouncing blue bits of light that led Brave’s Merida to change her fate may be just what Emma needs in season 5. The Will O’ the Whisps will lead you to either great or disastrous discoveries. Either way, they will change the fate of your journey. Now that Emma is the Dark One, the Whisps and Merida may be instrumental to guiding her to Camelot and Merlin.

At the Comic-Con roundtables Kitsis and Horowitz also mentioned that “[Merida’s story] is certainly a part of Emma’s journey as Dark Swan, and dealing with her darkness, and all that is tied with how we explore the world of Camelot this year, which at the end of last year, Merlin was revealed to be very important to what Emma needs.”

Camelot is Highlands adjacent

Camelot is within the realm of the Enchanted Forest, but are the Scottish Highlands? It’s not a stretch to say that in the Enchanted Forest anything is possible. The proximity of these particular locations shouldn’t pose as much of a leap of the imagination as others. Since Once Upon a Time will introduce Merida through Emma, maybe the two cross paths while Emma explores the limits of the Enchanted Forest testing the limits of her new powers.

Merida and Robin in a ‘Once Upon a Time’ archery showdown

There is plenty of weight to the subject matter of Once’s fifth season. Maybe a bit of levity is in order! What better way to take the edge off of the darkness than by offering a shooting match between Robin Hood and Merida? Can you imagine Merida splitting Robin’s arrow right down the middle?

Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long to figure out how Merida plays into the world. The creators wrapped up their commentary on the subject by telling us, “Hopefully you’ll see that [Merida’s story] all ties together in a fun way, and you’ll get that pretty much from the start.”

Once Upon a Time season 5, episode 1, “The Dark Swan,” airs Sunday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
