The Dark One returns to Once Upon a Time season 5, but she is nothing like you are used to seeing! Check out the Dark Swan here!
Update (July 6): Comic Con starts July 9, but before Once Upon a Time‘s panel the first promotional poster for season 5 arrived this morning. The poster looks more like Black Swan than Dark Swan, but either way Emma’s transformation into the Dark One this fall will captivate audiences.
Edward Kitsis teases the opening of the season saying, “The first thing Emma wants to do is get the darkness out. But will she be able to resist taking a bite of the forbidden apple?”

Ahead of Once Upon a Time‘s Comic-Con panel next week, EW previewed the first images of Jennifer Morrison’s Dark Swan.
At the close of last season, the Dark One left residence in Rumpelstiltskin’s body and moved around Storybrooke until it attempted to take hold of Regina. But after two seasons of fighting her way into the light, Emma stepped forward and sacrificed herself in Regina’s place. As the season cut to black, the last image viewers saw was Emma Swan’s name engraved on the dagger.

Speaking to EW, Edward Kitsis previews the next season saying, “Every part of her is fighting her dark urges. What happens when [the darkness] mixes with the lightest magic of all, and will Emma have the strength to fight it?” Don’t expect this to be a tale as old as time.
According to Adam Horowitz, “How a Dark One manifests is specific to each person who takes on the mantle. Emma will have her own unique spin on what it means to be a Dark One.”
Fans of the relationship between Hook and Emma will have their work cut out for them as the season progresses. Before Emma succumbed to the darkest magic, the last words she said to him were, “I love you.” Though this relationship will certainly be tested, romantic love is not the only love that the series will focus on. Expect to see all sorts of love, from family to friends, being tested when Once Upon a Time returns.
Kitsis continues, “We are going to be exploring love and what happens when you use it as a weapon and what are the things that it makes you do. In the past, we’ve said love is the most powerful magic of all. It makes you do many things you normally wouldn’t think you would.”
Now that the Savior is gone, it is up to Henry and his yet unnamed operation to find Merlin and break Emma free from her term as the Dark One.
