ABC’s Once Upon a Time season 5 seeks a wizard, a king, and a queen to fill their diverse casting call. Here’s who we want to see play Merlin, Arthur, and Guinevere.

Hear ye! Hear ye! Once Upon a Time season 5 seeks Merlin, Arthur, and Guinevere to round out their season 5 casting call! This will be the first time we meet the significant characters from the Arthurian legends since Lancelot married Snow White and Prince Charming in season 2.

The descriptions for each character are listed below along with our suggestions. Let us know who you want to see fill the roles in the comments!

Merlin

Via TV Line:Once is seeking a black Brit in his early 30s to early 40s and boasting a natural British accent to play ‘a man with great wisdom and intelligence beyond his years,’ someone who has always put duty in front of his own desires, even at great personal cost.”

Our never going to happen front runner: Idris Elba

We’re positive that Idris Elba’s career is too busy to allow for television guest spots at the moment. His title role in Luther, returns to BBC for a miniseries engagement later this year and Elba is currently lending his voice to both Finding Dory and Shere Khan in The Jungle Book. In addition he may be wrapped up with the crew of the Starship Enterprise if the rumors of his involvement as an unknown villain in Star Trek 3 prove to be true.

From the ABC Family: Alfred Enoch

Viola Davis will have Wes Gibbins rather busy when How to Get Away With Murder returns Thursdays this fall, but maybe Alfred Enoch can find time to swing up to Stevenson, British Columbia? He may be a little younger than the role calls for, but he certainly isn’t green when it comes to working in a land filled with magic.

WILDCARD: Colin Morgan

If all casting requirements are thrown out the window, we’d love to see ABC reboot the over-too-soon Merlin, with Morgan taking on the title role once more. It will never happen.

Arthur

Via TV Line: “Arthur is described as a ‘good and just ruler’ who, beneath the surface, ‘is a master manipulator who can carry a grudge to the grave, and maybe beyond.’ He harbors an ‘eternal burning love’ for Guinevere that can lean toward being a bit… controlling. For this role, Once aims to cast a gent in his mid-30s to early 40s, and again a British accent is mandatory.”

Our strongest non-British lead: Gabriel Mann

He looks like an Arthur, no? Unfortunately, Mann is not a native of the Isles and therefore may already be disqualified for the role. His prior gig a few time slots up on Revenge just came to a close and maybe with a bit of passport fraud and some accent training, ABC can keep Mann on Sunday nights!

Welsh? Are we getting closer? Matt Ryan

The lead of Constantine fits the description for Once Upon a Time‘s King Arthur quite well. The former demon hunter knows a thing or two about living in a world of unpredictable magic, and already has experience playing a role that tests his ability to fight for what is “good and just.” Now that the show is officially dead at NBC (sorry fans), perhaps ABC can lure Ryan over for a reading!

WILDCARD: Bradley James

Have you caught onto our theme yet? Merlin‘s own King Arthur fits the casting call almost too perfectly. British actor? Check. “Good and just ruler who is a master manipulator?” Well he already played Arthur. Check. Mid-30s? 31 is a bit young, but age is just a number! Check. Let’s make this happen, Once Upon a Time.

Guinevere

Via TV Line: “The casting call for Guinevere, meanwhile, seeks a Latina in her mid-20s to mid-30s Once Upon a Time to play a ‘headstrong queen’ who fell in love with her husband’s most trusted knight, the dashing Lancelot. She now must balance her own happiness with the well-being of Camelot.”

Strong front-runner: Josie Loren

Michelle Vega of CBS’s The Mentalist is our strongest pick to play Lancelot’s former lover. Loren’s character was recently killed off The Mentalist leaving her schedule quite free as she enters the fall booking season. We hear Canada is lovely in the late summer months.

Furious and fast pick: Michelle Rodriguez

If you’ve seen Michelle Rodriguez in any of the Fast and Furious films, you already know she is equipped to handle the toughness of a queen like Guinevere. But with such an adrenaline packed film career, a trip to the Arthurian realm of Once Upon a Time may be too slow for the actress.

WILDCARD: Natalie Martinez

Sorry, Merlin fans, but Once Upon a Time‘s Sunday night partner Secrets and Lies is where we found our wildcard. Martinez’s role on the ABC series as Jess Murphy will not return as the show moves onto a new murder for season 2. As Murphy, Martinez played a woman concealing a son who resulted from an affair with the man next door. Secret love affair? Strong independent woman? Sounds like Lady Guinevere to us!

As for our dearly departed Lancelot, it seems that the knight will remain deceased in the current timeline of the series (if there really is a timeline at all). But never say never, Sinqua Walls fans. Once Upon a Time loves to utilize flashbacks!

Once Upon a Time season 5 returns Sunday, September 27.
