With rhymes like that, maybe we should be writing the storybook! Let’s take a look at the stories that are left to tell on Once Upon a Time season 4.

Some tales have proven to not be as old as time once the writers of Once Upon a Time work their magic on the classics. In season 4, thus far, we have been to Arendelle and back (can you believe that was still this season?), gone under the sea and discovered Ursula’s past, and now we are mere episodes away from finding out about how the Author documents it all.

But with so many loose ends to tie up before the season 4 finale which, announced today, will be a 2 hour special airing on May 10, let’s round up all the questions we still need answered.

Cruella the de Vil

This week’s episode, “Sympathy for the de Vil,” will give Cruella the spotlight and hopefully give Oncers a look at how Cruella found herself in the Enchanted Forest. The greatly promoted Queens of Darkness have fallen apart after Ursula returned to the sea and Maleficent’s story took center stage. Cruella has been shoved to the back burner for weeks and it is finally time for the gin soaked socialite to pull focus.

Lily’s return

After the huge, yet not entirely shocking, reveal that Lily is in fact Maleficent’s daughter raised in the world without magic, that story was given two weeks off. It is a bit odd that following a week long hiatus the showrunners opted to forget about the rest of the ongoings in the group and focus solely on Robin Hood as a way to bring him, and Zelena, back into the story.

ICYMI: Once Upon a Time announces grown up Lily for season 4

There is still time to give Maleficent her reunion, though. As reports suggests, the role of Lily as an adult is filled and she will appear before the season’s end. But what will it be like when a child given enough darkness for two humans renters a world with magic?

What did the Author change?

The Author did not fulfill his duties and got a little loose with his writing. This fact has been beaten to death. But what, exactly, in the stories did the Author change? Was Snow White originally a blonde? Or are the stakes far greater than that. As the Author ran into Rumpel in the woods he seemed eager to get back to writing, even attempting to whittle a magical pencil. Is he on a specific mission to alter one storyline in particular? Whatever his purpose is, we can expect to get some kind of back story before the season ends.

Who is the Sorcerer?

The Author and the Sorcerer go hand in hand. Now that we have one half of the puzzle, it is time for Once Upon a Time to introduce the other. At the start of season 4’s second half, Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz both confirmed that the Author and the Sorcerer would appear and that they are not the same person. The Sorcerer’s apprentice is still hanging out in the Sorcerer’s hat and that should be priority number one for Team Charming to get a handle on the Author’s whereabouts.

Once free, maybe the Sorcerer will have some quick fix to the purple smoke cloud problem Storybrooke has.

Emma’s turn to darkness

In the initial preview for the spring return of Once Upon a Time Emma stood in front of the now disbanded Queens of Darkness, tempted by a walk on the dark side. After finally hearing her parents’ confession, Emma is treading on uneven ground trying to find where she can step without completely falling apart. Right now those steps are leading her to anger, but could one wrong slip push her into Gold’s plan?

Hopefully the Charmings and Hook have some more tricks up their sleeve to catch her if she falls from the Savior pedestal.

The end of happy endings

At the close of last week’s episode, Regina was faced with a choice: Save Robin Hood and ensure her happy ending, or leave him with Zelena and help save Emma. While her happy ending includes one with Robin, Henry’s happy ending involves one with her and Emma both alive and fighting for good. This season has been a test for Regina. She could easily fall back into her old ways and only take the steps necessary to ensure her well-being, but she worked too hard to work harder for the benefit of the many rather than the few.

Fans of the no-longer-evil Queen will have to wait for this and all the other answers to come from season 4!
