Once Upon a Time‘s season 4 winter hiatus lasted 10 weeks, but how much time was passing in Storybrooke while we were away? Find out in our preview!

Another time jump? That’s right! We’re heading into the future, but this time only six weeks will pass by and the residents of Storybrooke will remember all the details. Once Upon a Time season 4, episode 13 picks up on March 1 with “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” The Queens of Darkness are rallying in New York, preparing to unleash their combined evil on the the small hamlet in Maine.

Adam Horowitz teases what to expect when we catch up with the gang in the Storybrooke, saying, “We’re not repeating the missing year concept from last season. It’s more about giving some time for all of our characters to breathe in what happened, let it settle, and then see how the events of the first half of this season affected all of them.” A breather? In Storybrooke? It is almost as unbelievable as snow monsters and an ice wall!

But that peace and quiet will not last for long. Horowitz continues, “When a new event occurs at the start of the season you’ll see that they’re all once again thrown into turmoil and there’s a lot to deal with.” There’s the Once Upon a Time we know and love!

The second half of the season begins to tackle the larger battle of evil versus good. What makes a person evil? Can a person truly push past their evil ways and make a change for the better? There is only one person who knows the answer: the author. (Well, three if you count Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.) This season the author’s identity will become known, but is he really the one in control of Regina’s happy ending? The mission rallies Emma and Regina to work together with Henry to pick up clues around town that may reveal a trail to the mysterious author.

As for Emma Swan, will she stay on the side of the good? She is the mother of the boy with the Heart of the Truest Believer, daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. The seal of goodness is practically branded on her leather jackets. The heroine for three seasons must certainly be bored by now. And what is stopping her from channeling her light magic for a different purpose? After all, she is dating a former villain and shares custody of a son with the Evil Queen.

Horowtiz offers another preview, saying, “She’s been very close to people who use magic for good, and with Regina it was people who used magic for evil. Even though Regina has been on a path of redemption, with Emma’s it certainly has opened up the possibility of many different magical powers.”

But for now Emma seems perfectly happy in love and life with her parents, son, and one handed friend all located under one magical zip code.
