Once Upon a Time season 4, episode 3, “Rocky Road,” brought together Elsa and the Snow Queen. Find out what happened when the two forces met with our full recap.

Sundaes and Fires: But MOM! For all the adjusting that Regina and Robin need to do with Marian’s arrival, Roland needs to adjust as well. First order of business, getting ice cream. Marian, still new to the world where creamy treats are acceptable at anytime, gets her own special cone. Someone needs to point out that sprinkles are good, odd magical drizzle, not so much.

When Mayor Mary Margaret introduces her first town wide event, a fireside chat, the town becomes a bit rowdy when the priority issue is not the threat of ice around the perimeter. As Mary Margaret and David attempt to explain that the person responsible for the ice wall, Elsa, is a friend, not a foe. Mere seconds later Marian falls ill in the meeting, freezing from the inside out. All fingers point to Elsa.

Secrets of the Vault: Emma and Belle have their demands and Gold is not ready to budge. The town’s only source who may know what became of Anna in the Enchanted Forest dodges Emma’s questions and when Belle takes up the dagger to demand answers. Belle’s venture into threatening to use the dagger against Rumple reveals some deeper seeded trust issues, while Rumple’s inability to give his life over to the woman he loves is equally as troubling. Emma realizes that the urn that transported Elsa to this world is from the “stuff I don’t understand the power of” vault from Rumple’s castle.

The Rummaging Knave: Will Scarlett makes his grand entrance this episode when he is caught by not one, but two sheriffs (that’s a bit unfair!). The thief may have gotten away with breaking and entering into Robin’s tent, but he does slip in another crime that holds much more promise for the father-daughter duo. While trying the break into Any Given Sundae, Will realizes that the ice cream has not succumbed to the power outages.

After Will gets away, Emma and David continue down their newly paved road to a healthy father-daughter relationship. The concerns that Emma feels about her future and past sticking to her appointed title as the “Savior.” The latest threat to the town is breaking down Emma’s spirit and confidence. Her powers were less than impressive in the premiere, she strays from romantic entanglements with Hook, and tries to find her next mission as sheriff and town Savior. Regina is not any help with Emma’s confidence issue.

Hans and the Snow Queen: In the past, Kristoff and Elsa continue to hold down the fort in Arendelle, but a force from the past is blowing in to destroy their calm. Hans and his army are planning to attack the ports with the intention of gaining an urn to trap Elsa. This sends Kristoff and Elsa to find the urn on their own. While the duo are not teamed up, Hans is partially responsible for spilling the Snow Queen out of her captive environment. Much to the dismay of Hans, he is sent away and Elsa welcomes the Snow Queen into her home.

As Elsa goes through the halls and the Snow Queen points out that the portrait is of her late family. The Snow Queen is Anna and Elsa’s aunt, cast aside for her magical powers.

Aunty Icy: Emma’s attempts to protect a pirate does as much good as a pirate using a cell phone to communicate. Hook takes Elsa out of hiding to look for the person trying to run her out of town. In the interim of Emma’s personal crisis, Hook and Elsa stumble upon the Snow Queen in the woods after Rumple helps out a bit. The crocodile and the pirate face off in a glaring stare down during which Hook reminds Gold that if he does not agree to help them find the Snow Queen, he will reveal the truth about Gold’s dagger switch.

When the piece of Marion’s hair leads them to the Queen, Hook and Elsa attempt to call Emma for help, but are greeted by a voicemail message. Hook and Elsa try to flee, but Hook is frozen by the Snow Queen so that she and Elsa can “catch up.”

During their meeting Elsa discovers that the Snow Queen has more than one connection to the town. As she goes over their past, Elsa discovers that when the trip to Pabbie occurred to remove Anna’s memories in the movie, a few of Elsa’s were removed. One very important one, that Anna locked her in the urn. She gets inside of Elsa’s head and takes it one step further by attempting to impale Hook and to teach her a lesson about who she can trust.

My Love…: Emma shows up in the woods to witness Hook on the brink of death. In a very Molly Weasley moment, Emma unleashes her powers and is able to move Hook and David away from the frosty queen.

Later on that evening, Hook urges Emma to trust him. Emma reveals that she has been avoiding him because she cannot open up her mind to the possibility of loosing another person in her life. Hook reminds her, “once a pirate, always a pirate.” But he also attempts to console her by saying, “if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s surviving.” Sealed with a kiss, Emma seems to be a bit more open to the idea of them in the future. (And the preview for next week assures us that will happen!)

But another threat lurks in Emma’s future, the Snow Queen. She does not want Emma to recognize her and someone is there to help ensure it does not happen, Rumple.
