Once Upon a Time season 4 finally returned tonight with episode 13, “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” Our recap has all the darkness you can handle!

Ursula, Maleficent, and Cruella are not ready to sit down for a tea party and discuss world domination when they first meet up at Rumpelstiltskin’s call. But on tonight’s Once Upon a Time season 4, episode 13, the trifecta that Rumple fostered in the past comes to the present for a second shot at a happy ending.

What does normal look for Storybrooke? A bit like this — Snow has resigned her post as Mayor with Regina taking her rightful seat behind the desk. Emma leaves baby Neal with Granny and grabs a cup of coffee with her first mate, before heading to the station. Hook and Belle hit the books to hold a meeting of the Rumpelstiltkin ripped my heart out and smashed it to pieces club find a way for the fairies to be released from the Sorcerer’s Hat.

Finding out the identity of the author is going about as well as Bell and Hook’s translations. That is until an email from the magic box provides some information about an ancient ceremony. With the hat, dagger, and some tiki torches for ambiance, Regina performs the necessary handy work to unleash not only the fairies, but smoke monster #584.

We’d pay for a miniseries documenting the six weeks that Rumpelstiltskin spent bunking with Ursula in her NYC walkup eating Ramen and watching daytime TV. Their troubles beyond making rent are about to take one giant leap forward when the news exposes an old friend is in the area. Out on Long Island, Cruella watches as her wealthy estate is raided for repossession as her husband is carted off in a police car. But instead of mourning his loss, she takes back what is rightfully hers — a fur coat and her car. How else would she be able to reclaim the glory that Rumpel and Ursula are there to offer her? After all, ordinary is so unrefined.

What is a road trip without some snacks to get the evil juices pumping? Their quick trust fooled them before, so the Queens are keeping a safe distance from the Dark One, putting him in the backseat, as they grab one final meal in the real world, some Cluck-Cluck chicken.

Back in the Enchanted Forest, there is work to be done. Rumpel assembled the ladies to complete a series of tasks that only the combination of their powers could complete. Cruella’s persuasion moves a wall of blood scabbers, Maleficent tames the dragon’s fire, and Ursula’s tentacles snag the orb containing the curse. However, one must never trust an enthusiastic Rumpel. As the Chernobog, a hell demon who seeks out the greatest potential for darkness, is summoned, Rumpel leaves him to sniff out the darkest among the three. Maleficent takes her choosing with her chin up, allowing the other two to escape, until Ursula uses her tentacle to drag the remaining villain to safety. And so a bond is formed yet again in the Enchanted Forest.

A major theme this season is going to be the battle between what makes a hero and what makes a villain. Regina may be at the top of the list for those concerned with the change, but Hook is having a conflict of heart as well. A villain for so long, he finds it hard to accept that one good turn cancels out another. The fairies may be free thanks to his work with Belle, but he put them there in the first place.

Fairies are more valuable than creating healing potions and counter curses. Blue recognizes the blank book and clears up what Eddie and Adam have cleared up for fans all hiatus — the Sorcerer and the Author are two very separate people. But who are they? We still have no idea.

What we do know is that the demon from the Enchanted Forest is now bringing down the property value in Storybrooke and Regina and Emma’s magic combined cannot stop it. A phone call comes in that may help relieve the town from Monster Bash Lockdown. Ursula checks in with the mayor, requesting visitation rights and a chance to get a shot at one of those happy endings she keeps hearing about. Emma lays out the plan to lure the beast to the town line with Regina’s dark heart and trick it to cross into the realm without magic. But if that is a success, Ursula and Cruella gain access to the Snow Queen’s scroll.

Emma’s poor vehicle color choice, in addition to some evil hearts, is enough to lure the beast to the town line and luckily Emma’s brakes hold out enough to toss the beast out of Storybrooke. But before the scroll is handed over, Mary Margaret and David arrive with a plea to reconsider. Not everyone is Regina Mills. Not everyone can change their hearts. But Regina believes she would be a hypocrite to deny two seemingly reconciled people the chance at their happy ending simply because no one trusted them at first.

The beast is gone, but Storybrooke is once again a far cry from normalcy. Rumpel’s female comrades toss the mortal coward some mercy and bring him over the line. They must keep up their “turn for the better,” routine and he will lay low working his magic. Even without his powers, Rumpel still managed to reach Belle through email and get the hellbeast into town. Even with the beast seeking Regina’s potential for evil, Rumpel points out that the demon was torn between staying with Emma and unleashing himself on Regina. Not everyone’s heart is set in stone. Apparently deaths aren’t either… The Queens’ next stop is to reunite the full band.

And perhaps Emma’s parents are to blame. A secret meeting under the cloak of darkness leads Mary Margaret and David to confront Ursula and Cruella before they meet on Main Street. Whatever happened in the Enchanted Forest is not to be spoken of. What do you think it could be?
