Once Upon a Time creator Adam Horowitz has revealed a bit of new information about how Emma and Hook’s relationship will develop in season 4.

CaptainSwan shippers (that’s supporters of Emma and Hook’s romantic relationship, for those of you not initiated) everywhere rejoiced when Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) finally gave in to their feelings in the Once Upon a Time season 4 finale.

After dancing around each other for months, Hook finally admitted that he’d given up the Jolly Roger to bring Emma back to Storybrooke. And this was the push Emma needed to embrace her feelings for the villain-turned-hero.

But of course, no one was expecting the pair’s troubles to end here. For one, there has been no real proof that Emma and Hook are each other’s True Love (which seems the only real way to seal a ship on this show, unless one of them dies), and let’s not forget that despite his good intentions, Hook is still a pirate.

Speaking to TV Guide, Horowitz says that, “It’s going to be tricky for the two of them” to maintain a drama-free relationship. What we saw in the season 3 finale was their feelings reaching a new level, Horowitz clarifies, but this, “doesn’t mean that that’s the end of the story” for them.

Surprisingly (or maybe not), it won’t be Hook messing up their tentative happiness. Co-creator Edward Kitsis says, “Emma is obviously a person who has a tough time trusting people and letting her guard down. Sometimes you may feel something for somebody but your feelings hold you back.”

But hey, we’d wager that Hook/Emma supporters would prefer a little drama to a monotonous happily-ever-after – at least as long as there’s still more seasons ahead! If this was the end of Emma and Hook’s story, their relationship would likely take a backseat to more pressing storylines. But by keeping the fate of their romance ambiguous, the writers can maintain that all-important tension.

Once Upon a Time season 4, episode 1 “A Tale of Two Sisters,” airs Sunday, September 28 at 8/7c on ABC!
