Once Upon a Time 5×14, “Devil’s Due,” resurrects someone from Hook and Rumpel’s past. What role will Milah play in the Underworld? We have a few ideas.

No gravestone will go unturned in the Underworld. Rumpel, though fully restored to his Dark One status, is growing uneasy about the crew’s lingering presence in Hades’ landscape. In order embark on yet another promise of “happy wife, happy life,” and at happiness in the land of the living, Rumpel’s plan involves subjecting himself to a period of misery in the land of the dead.

Rumpel hopes to amplify Milah’s aura so that he and Emma can slip into Hades’ hideaway undetected. What unpleasant business is keeping Milah in the Underworld? Let’s examine some of her earthly relationships for the answer.

Hook

The captain of the high seas pillaged villages and stole plenty of coveted objects from helpless victims, including Rumpelstiltskin. He also took charge of a lost boy, one who turned out to be the son of the woman he loved. Milah only saw the good in Captain Hook. He was her escape from a life of cowardice and stability. She was sent to the Underworld by Rumpel, a fate that he felt she deserved after she abandoned their son. Hook is more likely her way out of the Underworld, not a chain keeping her there.

Verdict: If Milah and Hook reunite, it may open up old wounds for Milah and hurt Hook’s heart even more than it’s hurting already, but their reunion will not set Milah free.

Rumpel

Rumpel put an end to Milah’s adventure, but he was also the catalyst behind her escape. Another crippling tale from Milah and Rumpel’s relationship will surface in “Devil’s Due,” but it is not likely to put a positive light on their marriage. Even with Rumpel offering Milah the chance to see Hook again, he still carries the stigma of the coward who could not see that he was destroying the happiness of two people in his quest for power.

Verdict: Sneaking away in the middle of the night to follow her heart was cruel, but Rumpel killing her was far worse. The confrontation between Milah and Rumpel may finally see them lay their final encounter on the bow of Killian’s ship to rest, but it will not free her soul.

Baelfire

Baelfire is the person Milah owes the biggest apology to. If both Rumpel and Milah spent eternity analyzing their mistakes and making moves forward, Baelfire will always be the chain tying them down. Embarrassed by her husband’s cowardice, Milah makes the bold decision to leave both her son and husband behind for the chance to experience a life of adventure with Killian. Though she admits to living every day weighed down with regret for abandoning her son, she never made peace with Bae directly.

Verdict: Leaving Baelfire is the obvious unfinished business Milah is carrying around with her in the Underworld.

There are two ways out of the Underworld for trapped souls– they can either leave for a better place, free of ties to their past or they will find themselves lost forever to a land worse than the purgatory of the Underworld. Where will Milah end up? Our bets are on the latter.

Regardless of Milah’s fate, “Devil’s Due” will provide an interesting meeting ground for the two most important people in Hook’s life. Emma and Milah have a twisted family history as Milah is the mother of her first love, the first true love of her current love, and another of her son’s grandmothers. It should be interesting to see how the two will come together to save their favorite pirate.
