It seems that ABC is so happy with Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, it’s ordered more episodes of the freshman spinoff drama!

The Once Upon a Time spinoff series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland was originally envisioned as a midseason show, to fill in the hiatus between the first and second half of Once Upon a Time season 3.

But a few months ago, ABC announced that the series would premiere in the fall of 2013, airing Thursday nights (Once Upon a Time remains on Sundays). And now, more episodes have been added.

Thirteen episodes had originally been ordered for season 1, but Entertainment Weekly can now report that ABC has ordered an unspecified number of additional episodes.

At this point, we only know that the network hasn’t ordered enough episodes to make Once: Wonderland‘s first season a full 22 episodes.

In fact, creators Adam Horowitz and Ed Kitsis already have a very specific plan for the first season, as “a self-contained epic romance,” and are not looking for a full season pick-up at all.

The showrunners are very consciously trying make the show very tight, to avoid filler storylines.

“We really want to tell the story without having to worry about how to stretch it for five years,” Kitsis says, which means however many episodes the series now has, that “will be it for the season.”

Horowitz adds, “Whatever it ends up being, we’ll have told a complete story, with a beginning, middle and end.”

But while this particular adventure will last only a season, there can still be more to come. “The audience responds and people love these characters, the plan would be to bring it back next year and tell a whole new story,” Horowitz says.

We will let you know as soon as the total amount of episodes is announced. But it’s got to be a good sign that the writers have such a tight plan for the show, and that ABC is willing to allow them the exact amount of episodes their story requires.
