Once Upon a Time in Wonderland explores Will and Alice’s first meeting in “To Catch a Thief.” Read our full recap below!

Will, once a professional thief turned knave to the Queen of Hearts, struggles with the balance between heart and mind. With Anastasia, not dead, but asleep in a glass tomb in front of his cell. As Jafar approaches him with one last favor, Will starts to lose control of his mind and follow his heart. But what does this mean for Alice and Cyrus?

Jack of All Trades: A flashback to a time when Will is enslaved to the Queen of Hearts, the Knave begins his first quest to kill a mysterious figure roaming the grounds. The Knave breaks off from his troop and finds the target is Alice. She cunningly slips away from him, until he finds her again, this time asleep and unprotected. As he approaches her, a giant net sweeps him into the air, where Alice taunts his cleverness. She ponders why she continues to spare his life, when he is constantly seeking to take hers.

Alice lets him stew in the trap for a bit while she confesses that she is not the criminal the Queen makes her out to be. All Alice did was steal a weeping willow flower from the garden. Will reveals that he does not have a choice in the matter after he requested the Queen take his heart.

Instead of seeing this as a problem, Alice tells the Knave she will steal his heart back from the Queen’s vault. Will suggests that they work together, after all, a thief never works alone. Wondering why Alice offers to help him out, Alice says that everyone deserves a second chance.

A Family You Choose: In the present, Cyrus and Alice discuss their plan to return the water to the Well of Wonders, mother and all. Alice knows that faced with the choice to see her mother again, she would want to set her free. For Cyrus, the opposite is true. They plan to head out when Will shows up with a request. Let Jafar win.

Will’s face says everything; he is defeated and sees no other option to gain his second chance with Anastasia at the cost of changing the rules of magic forever. Alice wants to help her hurting friend out, but the risks outweigh the benefit of bringing Anastasia back. Too many people will die if Jafar gains the magic.

Cyrus lets the Knave in on their plan and he agrees to go on one last adventure before Jafar summons him back to his bottle for eternity. On the adventure, Will slops into his old habits trying to pry the staff away. When it does not fool Cyrus for a second, Will pleas his case and gets away from Cyrus. It is not long before Alice and Cyrus are on his tail.

Jabber, Jabber, Jabber: The Jabberwocky continues to request her dagger back, but Jafar’s fear reveals a story quite different from the one he uses as an excuse to keep her around. His fear, which smells like pine and snow, is that he will not be able to complete the spell without Amara.

He sends the Jaberwocky to seek out Alice and her minions and proceeds to release the other two genies for the first time. Once he does, he asks if they are aware of a woman named Amara. When they both reply no, he sends them back claiming their conversation was not what he was after, but their facial features gave him all he needed to know.

In the woods, Cyrus and Alice use the compass to track down Will. Alice finds him alone, for the first time, and tries to talk him out of his plan. He reminds her that he never left her side no matter what the danger as she went after Cyrus. Why can’t she let him do the same? Now that he has his heart, he wants to use it. Alice turns to set him free and falls down into the rushing rapids.

Again, plagued by his heart, he jumps after Alice. Once they are dry and alone once more, Alice suggests an alternate to his plan. Stop Jafar together, without giving him the victory. Besides, no thief can work alone. (Is it just because the series is ending, or is their friendship truly endearing?)

Old Friends: Back in the past, Alice gets through the Queen’s guards by timing their routine perfectly. Once inside the vault, she finds the Knave’s heart by decoding the boxes arranged like a deck of cards. Now that she owns his heart, Alice is in charge of what Will does. Her first and only request is to retrieve a piece of evidence that will prove Wonderland is ral to her father.

As the duo sits down to drinks, Alice learns that Will enjoys being around stubborn women. His sister, Penelope was extremely stubborn. If she did not fall through a thin sheet of ice at a young age, Will admits she may have turned out exactly like Alice. Their platonic bond grows stronger as Will gives a piece of his past to her in addition to his heart.

Alice reveals the Knave sent her on her way back home, rabbit in hand, only to stumble upon Cyrus around the corner before she could make it there. HE is responsible for her happily ever after, after all.

Familial Weakness: The rest of Alice and Will’s plan goes off extremely quickly as Cyrus is taken by the Jabberwocky to Jafar and they break into the palace. Before breaking off, Will says that this moment is “just a see you later.” Amara is released from her confines and begins a battle with Jafar. He cannot win if she dies, nor can he complete the spell without her. As it turns out, there is another option. Jafar stabs Cyrus. As he drifts away, Amara realizes that she must give into Jafar’s manipulation of her loyalties to save her son.

Alice arrives with the Sultan in time to find Cyrus on the floor and the magic transformation taking place.
