Once Upon a Time will soon be tackling Disney’s animated Hercules, and here’s everything a superfan wants to see make it into the show.

I’ve never been quiet about my love for Hercules. We did a whole Onceable podcast episode on the movie and which aspects we’d hope to see make it into the show.

As we realized while discussing the movie, there are quite a few parallels between the feature and the show. Hercules goes from a nobody to someone who saves the world from Hades in the same way Emma goes from an unknown to a savior. The idea that love conquers all is prevalent in both properties, as is the importance of family, no matter if it was a family you were born into or a family you happened to find along the way.

We don’t know much about how Once Upon a Time is going to tackle Hercules, but we do know Hades, Hercules, and Megara have all been cast. We also know Emma & Co. are heading to the Underworld in order to save Hook, which is where they’ll meet Hades when Once Upon a Time returns on March 6 for episode 100, “Souls of the Departed.”

According to the character descriptions, it sounds like the show might be retelling the origin stories for Herc and Meg, unlike what we’ve seen with the Frozen and Brave storylines. That said, here’s what I’m hoping to see in the show.

A hell of a lot of Hades

Hades is one of the most charismatic villains in Disney history, and Once Upon a Time should definitely attempt to tap into that. With anti-heroes like Regina and over-the-top antagonists like Rumpelstiltskin, Hades will really have to bring it if he wants to hold his own against them on screen. I want him to be deliciously evil and ridiculously hilarious. It wouldn’t hurt if he also said, “Name’s Hades, Lord of the dead. Hi, how ya doin’?”

Another aspect of Hades that I think is absolutely necessary to the character is his blue flaming hair. It might seem like a superficial request, but Hades’ hair is part of his very being. When he’s excited, it grows and covers his shoulders and arms. When he’s angry, it turns bright red. This might be difficult to pull off in a live action version without making it look absolutely ridiculous, so I hope, at the very least, they find a way to incorporate the fire into his movements. And yes, it has to be blue.

Megara can’t be a damsel in distress

Hercules doesn’t get a whole lot of attention from Disney, and I have a feeling it’s because Meg doesn’t fall into their typical princess mold. Though Megara in Greek mythology was the daughter of King Creon of Thebes, that’s never explicitly stated in the movie. Instead, it shows her working with the bad guy in order to save her own soul. It was through the power of love that she saw the error of her ways, but even so, she never relied on Hercules to keep her out of trouble. In fact, she was the one to save Herc’s life with no regard for her own. That thread should continue throughout her role on Once Upon a Time.

Meg’s sassy personality makes her a seductive, witty hero, and as my favorite character from the film, I’m nervous her single episode will reduce her to simple love interest. She needs to be proactive about her life, just like she was in the movie. Still, I’d give anything to see her in the purple dress.

A nod to some minor characters

I don’t expect to see everyone from Pegasus to Pain and Panic because, let’s be real, that’s a lot of the CGI budget I would prefer to see used on Hades’ hair. Still, it’d be nice to get a glimpse of Phil, if Herc is training to become a hero, and even a couple of throwaway lines about some of the others wouldn’t go amiss.

If this is a retelling of how Hercules met Megara and became a hero, how much will stick to what we already know? Keeping it closer to the actual Greek myths would be a great twist, but Once Upon a Time is still a family show.

Hints that Hercules’ story is just the tip of the iceberg

One of the reasons why I love Hercules is because I’m obsessed with Greek mythology. Sure, Disney’s version is hardly accurate, but it’s still a great story, and I can look past the differences because the real story isn’t exactly suited for children.

But I definitely want more of a look into how Once Upon a Time would tackle Greek mythology. In the movie, we get dozens of gods and goddesses. Some of them are more prominent than others, like Zeus, Hera, and Hermes, but we see all of the major gods and plenty of minor ones, too. If we can’t see Zeus in this moment on Once Upon a Time, I’d love the idea of the show tackling some other stories from mythology somewhere down the road. We’ve already gotten previous hints to additional entities (like Pegasus feathers on the Jolly Roger), so a few more clues as to what else could exist would be nice.

It’s okay to go a little meta

One of the coolest aspects of Hercules is the way it gets kind of meta. Herc talks about Oedipus making him feel better about his own life, and we see the creation of the iconic Venus de Milo. Hercules’ fans are surprisingly similar to the way real-life fans react to celebrities in our own time. Not to mention Thebes and Storybrooke are essentially the same town.

Once Upon a Time could get away with a few pointed jabs at itself here. I’d love to see Grumpy leading a group of residents to the local well to talk about how terrible their lives are. A couple of pop culture references also wouldn’t go amiss. OUAT definitely has room to go outside the box as they tackle a story based around gods and heroes and legendary monsters.
