Nobody puts Once Upon a Time‘s baby in the corner! Henry Mills needs a strong storyline. We have a few suggestions for how to make it happen.

Once Upon a Time season 6 is experiencing a rebirth. The storylines are beginning to repeat in new and sometimes interesting ways. As everyone in town reflects on how far they’ve come in their journey, it’s time to recognize a character who has, quite literally, grown up in Storybrooke.

Henry Mills deserves a decent storyline and he deserves one right now. What better time to share the spotlight with the lead characters than the present?

Emma Swan is currently reflecting on the journey that brought her to Storybrooke. Hook is looking at what it means to rebuild a family in the wake of his past. Regina is facing her worst enemy, herself. The list goes on and on.

As each of Storybrooke’s finest pick apart their past transgressions, why doesn’t Henry take a look at the boy who brought the Savior to town. Where is his self-reflection?Once Upon a Time harps on the pain of the leading adult cast ad nauseam. Just because Henry is a child it doesn’t mean that the pain of losing Neal, Robin, and normality is any less real.

If Once wants to break out its circular storytelling pattern in season 6, then it should explore the world according to Henry. Below, we present a few stories to get the ball rolling in Henry’s direction.

Operation Yankee Doodle

Don’t act like Henry is any better at coming up with code names.

Operation Yankee Doodle presents a change for our young hero to bond with his lady friend, Violet. At the close of season 5, Violet reveals that her father is not from Camelot, but rather from the non-magical realm of Connecticut.

These love birds are not in opposition to adventure. Instead of exploring New York City and attempting to destroy magic, this time let’s send them on a quest into Violet’s family history. Maybe her grandfather worked for ESPN (there’s your Disney/ABC pairing!) in Bristol.

Let the grownups deal with their own identity crises for a while! Let the teens bring in some original stories!

Operation Inkwell

Ok, maybe Once Upon a Time can’t send Henry and Violet on an excellent adventure. That’s fine! There is plenty to explore in Storybrooke. How is life as the Author going, Henry?

The Author is as much of a mystery as it was when we first met Isaac Heller. Henry’s task is to record history, not alter it. We see brief glimpses of Henry’s writing, but they barely change the plot. In fact, the first story Henry produces disappoints his grandparents because it fails to reveal information about Hades.

Henry needs to discover what it means to be the Author. Isaac’s attempt at fairytale fan fiction explored the dangers of using the quill for personal gain. There has to be more to the rules and powers behind the quill than recording fact. Somewhere in the cluster of Untold Stories there must be one that brings the Sorcerer back into the picture. Or another that mentions another incarnation of the Author.

Let’s see if Henry can write some new endings into existence for the stranded characters. After all, we know that writing unfinished business is in his wheelhouse.

Operation Iago

The rest of the heroes seem a bit preoccupied with the impending Evil Queen takeover, so why not give Henry some agency in the Agrahbah storyline? Aladdin is in desperate need of a hope-inspiring speech. See what just two seconds in Henry’s presence did? Aladdin gave up the Fate’s destiny sheers!

Send Henry over to Jasmine and Aladdin’s meetings. There is so much more to this Savior business that we are not getting from Aladdin going off on his own. He can record the history of Agrahbah, inspire Aladdin to reconnect with his Savior persona, and set something in motion.

Henry can finally put all those moments with Snow and David to use! Imagine it– inspire hope, find a way to help promote closure and comfort, get answers. It is the Once Upon a Time fool proof method for success!

Operation Good Cry

Or maybe Henry’s story doesn’t need to be that complicated. Maybe it is something as simple as running a support group for abandoned children.

While the adults are all off figuring out where they belong, and who the villain of the week is, the kids get tossed into school. Henry can pull aCharlie Bartlett in the middle school bathroom stalls. (Without the drug dealing, of course.)
