The untold stories of Once Upon a Time season 6 are getting some guidance from Morpheus, played by Giles Matthey.

Once Upon a Time is not quite through with Greek mythology. Following last season’s brief love affair with Hades and one-night stand with Hercules and Megara, the show will once again attempt to bring in more mythology with Morpheus, the god of dreams.

Giles Matthey (24: Live Another Day, True Blood) will join the cast this fall and will stick around for at least one episode where he will guide the residents of Storybrooke, and the new visitors, through the land of dreams, EW reports.

Morpheus does not strike me as a character who waltzes through the portal of endless stories that Mr. Hyde opened as he declared Storybrooke his new playground. Perhaps Zelena has some lingering connection with the gods and goddesses and summons the deity for his services. As for whose stories we will see when Once Upon a Time returns this fall, that remains a mystery. There are stirrings of a Sinbad, Aladdin, Jasmine, and Scheherezade addition, but no confirmed reports.

Now that the Once Upon a Time world is open to any and all stories, the removal of the defined arcs of the season will be a welcome change. The winter finale is no longer a finish line for a character like Hyde. It’s time for OUAT to ramp up the storytelling and get rid of the time-honored tradition of writing characters off by having them disappear through a convenient portal like our friends from Camelot, Frozen, Neverland, etc.

It’s no secret we weren’t thrilled with the way last season panned out in a story sense. However, once the housekeeping of the finale was over and done, the intrigue of Jekyll and Hyde combined with the expansion into the narrative of untold stories and the possibility of characters beyond the on-brand Disney trend reignited the spark that made Once Upon a Time so great in past seasons! We remain cautiously optimistic two months out from the premiere.
