The Once Upon a Time showrunners Kitsis and Horowitz sit down to answer some questions about what we can expect to see this season with regards to the curse being broken, August’s purpose, the David/Mary Margaret romance, the Big Bad Wolf, and… wait, squirrel babies? Yes, Lost fans, you got it. Beware of spoilers.

In the TV Guide interview, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis discuss some of the most pressing issues for fans right now, including what is going on with David, Mary Margaret and Kathryn? Which one is David actually cheating on? Kitsis explains:

The whole idea of the show is that Storybrooke is cursed. [David and Mary Margaret’s] love is so strong it keeps pulling them together no matter how hard we try to keep them apart. Of course, the curse has to keep them apart. [We] love that the audience is mad that David cheated, but he’s married to Snow White. In Storybrooke, he has all this guilt of cheating on Kathryn, but the truth is, that’s the curse.

They also reveal some of the time frames we’ll see in the fairytale world: next Sunday’s episode 1×15 ‘Red Handed’ takes place chronologically right after the Huntsman let Snow White escape, while 1×16 ‘Heart of Darkness’ picks up after Snow White loses her memory. It’s hard to keep track, right?!

The writers go on to discuss August (Eoin Bailey)’s role on the show and some interesting things that’ll happen because of his presence in Storybrooke:

When you say to Ruby, “How long have you worked at Granny’s?” She’s like, “Forever,” because she has no conception of time. Once [August] puts it in her head, “Well, why do you?” She’s like, “Why do I?” It’s a snowball effect.

Lost fans will enjoy this next bit, in which Kitsis and Horowitz discuss casting Emilie de Ravin as Belle and whether they thought her being in the insane asylum would put the role too close to Claire:

We had the idea early in the season to have Belle in the insane asylum, and then when we were talking about who would be the perfect Belle, because… Belle is a strong character, and so we’re like, “Oh, it’s Emilie.” Then we actually debated changing the ending because of the squirrel baby, and then we thought, “No, let’s surge. Squirrel baby again!”

Finally, something interesting they revealed was that Regina might eventually change her mind about the curse! They say:

She enacted it in such an emotional place that she wasn’t thinking clearly. She came here and probably got a little bored. Now that Emma is here, it’s reawakened her passion of revenge and anger. She’s protecting her son. I don’t think she fully understands what she did. I don’t think she understands the repercussions and she’s beginning to lose sight of even why she did it.

Other things revealed include that we’ll learn the identity of the Big Bad Wolf in ‘Red Handed’ (the Ruby centric episode), and that they will be exploring different characters beginning to remember the fairytale world – though not necessarily this season. They also discuss Rumpelstiltskin, and reveal that in 1×19 ‘The Return’ we’ll see more of his story and reveal what happened to his son. You can read the whole interview at TV Guide.
