Once Upon a Time fans, Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis have a new show for you! Check out their new horror series Dead of Summer!

After five seasons of Once Upon a Time the series’ creators are going to spend some time outside of the Enchanted Forest. Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis’ new series Dead of Summer has received a series order from ABC Family/Freeform. The network’s first horror series arrives during ABC Family’s attempt to shed its old skin and reinvent itself as Freeform in 2016.

ABC Family executive vice president of programming, Karey Burke describes the shift saying, “Dead of Summer is about what happens when summer camp goes wrong — really, really wrong. The horror genre is new for us and I’m thrilled to have Adam, Eddy and Ian [Goldberg] bring their immeasurable talent to our network and usher us into this new space.”

You are not going to see a summer camp filled with teens struggling to find a tree that gives them just enough cell reception to post a Vine of the murderer. The series will be set in 1989.

Will the series have an iconic killer or tackle another element of horror?

As EW reports, the official log-line for the show states:

Set in the late 1980s, school is out for the summer, and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Clearwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses — and first kills. Clearwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn. Part coming-of-age story, part supernatural horror story, Dead of Summer is a bold, new series that mixes genres as it examines the light and dark of a summer like no other.

What does this mean for their focus on Once Upon a Time? The two creators are heavily involved with every aspect of their current hit that relies on their guidance when it comes to introducing new mythology (we are still partying over the Hercules announcement earlier this week) and intertwining the complex relationships between the classic fairytales and modern Disney legends.

We do not expect their passion for Once Upon a Time to falter and we hope that Dead of Summer is given the same amount of care and dedication!

What do you think about ABC Family dipping their toe in the horror genre?
