Edward James Olmos discusses his role as Robert Gonzales, and how upcoming events will tie into Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Olmos was introduced in last week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the venerable Robert Gonzales, and teases that events in the series will play into the next major Marvel event.

“When you see [Avengers: Age of Ultron], you’ll start to realize how well this show is connected,” Olmos promises.

The actor, known for his awesome roles in Blade Runner and Battlestar Galactica, also discussed the impact Gonzales will have on the immediate straits of Director Coulson and his team.

“Things are going to be more complex than they were before Coulson had to deal with Gonzales. Much more,” he says, adding that this complexity only benefits the intensity of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. “It makes for a better show. You put any character into this kind of dilemma, and you’ve got better writing. You’ve got better everything.”

But the increased stakes also means that life for the increasingly embattled characters — and fans — won’t be getting any easier. “It gets to be really, really, difficult. Especially if you are a Coulson fan,” Olmos says.

Last season, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. underwent a massive metamorphosis after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Hydra’s coup and the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D. changed the series permanently — and though the link between the show and Avengers: Age of Ultron has been underplayed so far, it appears there are other shocks ahead.

One twist in particular, Olmos promises, will be “mind-blowing” — though he declines to offer any further information.

Hopefully tomorrow night’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., titled “One Door Closes,” will reveal more solid hints on which to speculate.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 15, “One Door Closes,” airs tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
