The Ocean’s Eleven franchise is being rebooted with an all-female team, led by Sandra Bullock and directed by the Hunger Games’ Gary Ross.

According to The Playlist (via Den of Geek), a reboot/sequel/spin-off/who-even-knows-anymore of Ocean’s Eleven has “been quietly gestating” since 2014, but was put on hold when original producer Jerry Weintraub passed away earlier this year.

But it’s apparently still in development, with a script by Olivia Milch (Little Women). Original director Steven Soderbergh and lead star George Clooney are both involved in a producer capacity, with Clooney potentially making a cameo as Danny Ocean (which would make the new movie not a reboot, but a… sequoot?).

Sandra Bullock is reportedly set to star in the female-led Ocean’s movie, which is interesting, because as we reported last month, Bullock also “replaced” her Gravity co-star George Clooney in the forthcoming David Gordon Green film Our Brand is Crisis.

Of course taking a male-led franchise and rebooting it with a female cast is also what Paul Feig is doing with Ghostbusters, and we recently learned that the A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is going to be female-centric (although we don’t know what they’re gonna do about the title).

It’ll be interesting to see if Gary Ross, who directed the first Hunger Games movie and is currently working on The Free State of Jones, can breathe new life into this franchise. Arguably, only the first Ocean’s installment was actually any good.

We’ll have to see how this project develops, and what other actresses will join Sandra Bullock’s team! They’ve got a lot to live up to: Ocean’s Eleven made history as one of the first ensemble films in recent years to collect some of Hollywood’s biggest a-listers, including Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, and Bernie Mac.
