After a failed attempt several years ago to replace Jay Leno with Conan O’Brien as the host of NBC’s The Tonight Show, a second go at a long-term plan with younger blood at the helm is now underway.

The New York Times reports that Fallon, who currently hosts Late Night (formally O’Brien’s) will succeed Leno as Tonight Show host. What’s more, the plan is to move The Tonight Show back to New York City. It currently films in Los Angeles and hasn’t been shot in the Big Apple since the 1950s when Steve Allen hosted.

NBC’s goal, like it was several years ago with O’Brien (who flopped in the ratings and was let go), is to retain it’s younger talent and make sure they stay relevant with younger audiences. ABC recently pulled their late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel to 11:35 from 12:00 AM, putting him in direct competition with Leno and David Letterman. Despite the shake up, Leno continues to regularly win the ratings war.

The peacock network currently films two other late night shows in New York: The aforementioned Late Night as well as Saturday Night Live. A new set is already being constructed for Fallon, though it’s unclear if he’ll wait to use it with his new show.

It’s not clear what plans NBC has for Leno post-Tonight Show, if any. Fallon hasn’t blown us away as a late night host but we have faith he’ll be able to hold the fort down for NBC. Notably, if Fallon takes the gig he’ll have the distinction of having played huge roles in all three of the network’s long-running late night programs.

The New York Times says the switch won’t happen later than Fall 2014.
