No Doubt’s first album in more than 10 years, Push and Shove, is a “hodgepodge” of musical styles, the band says.

Gwen Stefani described the new album and discussed the changes that have taken place since No Doubt’s last album together, in an interview with CBS Local’s AMP radio.

A “hodgepodge” of styles isn’t abnormal for No Doubt, however. The California band has been known for mixing ska, reggae and ’80s rock. Push and Shove plays off that.

“It’s really balanced of everything we’ve ever been,” Gwen Stefani told CBS Local. “I’m writing about being overwhelmed by too much going on, too many great things going on and trying to balance everything. It feels like that’s kind of a repeated theme, but you know, it’s always about love. It’s always about all the same old stuff.”

But times have changed since the band last released an album. People tend to buy singles more so than full albums today.

“It’s definitely sad to think that people might not hear the whole record, you know, for us because we work so hard on it and we love it so much and we want to share it,” Gwen said. “I’m just saying right now, ‘Please! Just put your headphones on in a dark room. Put your, you know, computer up, look at the lyrics.’”

The band has released two singles from its upcoming sixth studio album – its first since 2001’s Rock Steady, which produced Grammy-winning singles in “Hey Baby and “Underneath It All.” Listen to “Settle Down” and “Push and Shove” below.
