Nintendo has announced that it will be developing some of its most beloved characters specifically for smartphones and tablets.

The news of the development for smartphones and tablets came today alongside the exciting news of a new gaming console titled “NX,” which is currently in development. Nintendo has said it has struck a deal with DeNA Co., a Japanese game provider, and will set up a new mobile game platform, according to The Wall Street Journal. A new game distribution portal is set to be released this fall and be accessible to other Nintendo consoles as well.

Until now, Nintendo has always been adamant about not licensing its characters to mobile platforms as it has valued its console strategy as a core part of its business. However, the mobile gaming industry continues to grow, leaving some analysts perplexed as to why Nintendo would remove itself from the growing business — until now.

As recently as 2013, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has stated on record that the company has no interest in moving games to mobile smartphones and tablets, citing the preservation of the Nintendo console as the core strategy: “If we think 20 years down the line, we may look back at the decision not to supply Nintendo games to smartphones and think that is the reason why the company is still here.”

Fans of classic titles like Super Marios Bros., Pokémon and Zelda will be very excited to hear the news that they could soon be playing their favorite games on their iPhones and iPads.

What are your thoughts about Nintendo finally making the shift and moving into smartphone and tablets? And what games are you hoping to play on your mobile device?
