Nicholas Hoult is playing J.R.R. Tolkien in a biopic of the author’s life, and the film has finally gotten an official release date.

J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most famous fantasy writers out there, and his work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit is beloved by millions of readers. However, while many know a great deal about Tolkien’s works and the world he created in Middle Earth, the author himself is rather enigmatic.

Fox Searchlight set out to fix that with their new biopic about the writer. Nicholas Hoult is set to play Tolkien, and according to The Wrap, the movie is officially set to release in theaters on May 10, 2019.

The film was directed by Dome Karukoski, and will explore the “formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love, and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school.” The movie will also chronicle Tolkien’s time as a soldier in WWI, how the war nearly broke his group of friends (or his Fellowship, if you like) apart, and how those experiences inspired Lord of the Rings.

The movie, appropriately titled Tolkien, has completed filming, so we will hopefully see some sort of a trailer for the film in the coming months. In addition to Hoult, Tolkien stars Lily Collins, Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O’Reilly, Pam Ferris, and Derek Jacobi.

We’re so excited to get a better look at the early days of this beloved fantasy author’s life, and you can bet we’ll be there when the film opens on May 10.
