Supernatural is heading in a new direction now Jeremy Carver has taken the reins, and in a new interview he shares some spoilers about what we can expect!

Speaking to Zap2It, Carver previews what some see as a controversial storyline for Sam, the fact that he’s getting a new love interest. He acknowledges that the writers have had to overcome some obstacles trying to find a way where Sam could let himself open up to someone new, considering his past dating history. Carver teases:

Who is the man that walked out of that building? Who is that version of Sam? And who is the type of person who could possibly rebuild that crumbled thing in him? […] Without getting too much into detail, there is tremendous emotional honesty [between them]. That’s what we’re going for there.

As for Dean, he’ll develop a significant relationship as well, but of a different kind. Dean forms a “reluctant alliance” with the vampire Benny, who gets him out of Purgatory. Carver calls him, “a big influence and a force to be reckoned with,” and while he won’t call Benny the Big Bad of the season, he will say that “he’s big, he’s bad. He’s a lot of things.”

Speaking about Castiel and Dean’s time in Purgatory, expect that to be explored primarily through flashbacks! Carver tells TV Line:

People are always referring to purgatory as hell, and purgatory is not hell. Purgatory is a really brutal, free-wheeling place, but it has different effects on different people. It will have a different effect on Cas and Dean as you already started to see [in the Season 7 finale]. But I will say what you think you saw might not be exactly what you saw.

As for the future of the show, CW president Mark Pedowitz reaffirmed his interest in seeing the show continue for a long time at the recent TCA press tour. TV Line reports that there was “no question” about renewing the show for season 8, and as for season 9 and beyond, Pedowitz said, “We’re big believers in the show. There’s always conversations that happen. I am a big Supernatural fan.” Let’s take that as a good sign!
