Best Redbox movies available between March 24 and April 14

‘Fast & Furious 6’

Available at Redbox on March 24.

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Luke Evans

With Fast & Furious 7 hitting theaters soon, the sixth film in the popular series is definitely worth watching, even if it’s just to catch up on the story. After Dom and Brian’s Rio heist left the family with $100 million dollars, our speed-demon heroes have spread out across the globe.

They continue to have to live off the grid though, leaving many of their lives in difficult situations. Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson, finds out that an organization of mercenary drivers are doing some pretty massive jobs around the world, and it’s revealed that Dom’s girlfriend, Letty, is the mastermind. Hobbs asks Dom and Brian to put his team back together, so that they can stop the madness. If they’re successful, Hobbs promises full pardons for everyone so that they can live freely.

‘Into the Woods’

Available at Redbox on March 24.

Starring: James Corden, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick

Into the Woods is a unique take on many fairy tales, and has an all-star cast featuring Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, and Chris Pine. The film tells the magical story of a couple (played by Blunt and Corden) who are desperate to have a child, and embark on a perilous journey into the Woods to lift an evil witch’s curse.

During their difficult journey they encounter Jack (and the giant beanstalk), Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella (played incredibly by Kendrick) who are also on their own quests to make better their lives.

‘The Fast and the Furious’ (Original)

Available at Redbox on March 24.

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Rick Yune

The original Fast and the Furious movie will soon be available on Redbox, as the seventh film hits theaters on April 3. Probably the best film of the series, Dominic Toretto races on the streets of L.A., as he spends his days rebuilding race cars. Dom races other street racers for thousands of dollars, and sometimes pink slips, which is how he runs into Brian, played by the late Paul Walker.

Brian ends up revealing that he’s an undercover cop, and Dom finds out after something goes terribly wrong when he and his crew try to steal a semi-truck and the contents of its container. The film started a massively successful franchise, and feels the most real out of all of the films in the series.

‘Interstellar’

Available at Redbox on March 31.

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Wes Bentley, John Lithgow

Interstellar was one of the more inspiring films of this past year, and when our time on Earth is almost up, a team of scientist and explorers (including McConaughey) are tasked with the most important space mission of all-time. They travel beyond our galaxy, reaching a strange black hole.

This film’s use of time travel and it’s sometimes shaky science is interesting enough, but the visuals are some of the best seen in years. If you didn’t happen to catch this in theaters, we’re sorry, but definitely watch it at home – just watch the volume button if you have easily annoyed neighbors.

‘The Imitation Game’

Available at Redbox on March 31.

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech

The Imitation Game stars Benedict Cumberbatch as an incredible war hero, Alan Turing, who is a cryptologist during World War II. The world is losing the war against Germany, and Turing believes he can crack the Enigma code which the Germans use to encrypt all of their transmissions. Alan Turing would later help build one of the first true computers, which helped he and his team break the code, but his life was turned upside down when the British government found out that he was a homosexual, which was illegal in the country in 1952.

We now know he lead an incredible group of scholars, linguists, and chess champions into saving the world, and is finally credited with cracking the “unbreakable” Enigma code that Germany was using to beat the Allies. Keira Knightley also has an incredible role as his friend and fellow code-cracker, and she lives in a world where women aren’t accepted in their field. It’s a story that everyone should know, and this movie tells it well.

‘A Most Violent Year’

Available at Redbox on April 7.

Starring: Jessica Chastain, Oscar Isaac, Albert Brooks, David Oyelowo, Catalina Sandino Moreno

In New York City, in the winter of 1981, it’s seen as one of the most violent years the city has ever seen. Oscar Isaac plays an incredibly ambitious immigrant whose family has climbed a somewhat morally crooked ladder as they try to grow their business of trucking oil/gas. He seems like a decent businessman, with a few skeletons hanging in his closet, but he’s doing his best to stay straight.

Isaac’s character, and his wife (played by the brilliant Jessica Chastain) attempt to capitalize off the opportunities of city rivalries, but the corruption threatens his business, his family, and leads him down a path that he had tried to avoid his entire life. This is a great film about gangsters, without any real gangsters, and has a cast to kill for.

‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb’

Available at Redbox on April 7.

Starring: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Robin Williams, Dan Stevens

The latest Night at the Museum takes place at New York’s Natural History Museum, where the exhibits come to life at night yet again. But when they start behaving strangely, Larry, the newly-promoted director of the late night operations has to find out why this is all happening.

The Tablet, which has always magically brought the exhibits to life, has begun to decay, and the only way he can begin restoring it is by visiting the British Museum. In his attempt to save his museum, Larry, his son Nick, and the museum exhibits, all travel from New York to London, where they discover the tablet’s true power, including hilarious actress Rebel Wilson.

‘Big Eyes’

Available at Redbox on April 14.

Starring: Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, Danny Huston, Jason Schwartzman, Krysten Ritter

Tim Burton directs Christoph Waltz as artist Walter Keane, who becomes a household name in the ’50s when his interesting and best-selling paintings of big-eyed children make him a popular talk show guest, as well as an intriguing artist.

But the big question remains, is the artwork really his? His wife Margaret, played by Amy Adams, claims that her husband has been using her paintings and simply putting his name on them, and a legal battle ensues, which could destroy their marriage and finally give everyone the proof they need to see who the real artist in this relationship is.

‘Exodus Gods and Kings’

Available at Redbox on April 14.

Starring: Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Ben Mendelsohn

Exodus was set to be an epic retelling of the story of Moses, who was raised in a palace in Egypt as Ramses’ brother, played by Joel Edgerton. The film, directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator), sees Ramses become the pharaoh, but they later find out that Moses had been of Jewish descent, and even worse, born from a family of slaves.

Moses becomes the leader of the Israelites, leading nearly half a million slaves to rise up against Ramses tyranny, and make their escape from Ramses and his slavery. The film displays the Bible’s multiple deadly plagues, which cause Ramses to go after Moses and his people. Christian Bale does a solid job as Moses, and the film has a grand scale.

‘The Penguins of Madagascar’

Available at Redbox on April 14.

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, John Malkovich, Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Christopher Knights

Some great actors lent their voices to some of the most entertainingly mysterious birds in the global espionage game in The Penguins of Madagascar. Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, all must join forces together with a spy organization called the North Wind, led by Agent Classified, to stop Dr. Octavius Brine from taking over the world.

Best Actor nominee Benedict Cumberbatch plays Agent Classified, while legendary actor John Malkovich is the charming villain. It’s a fun film, and your kids will enjoy the incredible computer animation, while you enjoy the few jokes thrown in for the adults who sit through the animated flick with their kids.
