The attention-grabbing poster and an opening clip have been released for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1.

Uneasy alliances appear to be the running theme in new promotional material released for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1. The episode, titled “Shadows,” premieres next Tuesday, and new art and a new clip make it clear that those shadows have a price.

The sneak peek, originally released for certain cable customers earlier in week, is an opening scene from “Shadows” which introduces several new players in Coulson’s long game.

Agent Isabelle Hartley (Lucy Freaking Lawless) and her partner Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) will make their debut in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1. Judging from the clip above, the two are very tough customers – and though they take orders from Coulson, they don’t seem totally at ease with Skye, May, and Trip.

In other words, it should be fun to watch them tango.

The new art poster for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 also makes a strong impression with its stark colors and powerful symbolism.

The poster’s distinct color scheme jumps out at us immediately. While the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo is intact, it is darkly transposed on a cracked background of red – just like HYDRA’s symbology. The characters are carefully arranged beneath the eagle’s wings; only Coulson does not cast a long shadow.

We also can’t help notice that the traitorous Grant Ward is facing inward, while the rest of the team looks outward. Ward is also side-by-side with Simmons, which is unnerving enough without seeing the biochemist separated from Fitz.

The official synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1 hints at why the tone of the poster may be so dark.

“Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources,” the summary says, “but that’s not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1, “Shadows,” will air on Sept. 23 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
