It’s the first week of September, and that means there are tons of TV shows and movies new on Netflix.

At the beginning of every month, the large Netflix catalog gets an influx of new content. August is no different, and some of the titles that are available this month are some of our favorite movies ever. Our queues are currently too full, but it looks like they’re about to get even fuller.

The full selection of titles that are and will be new on Netflix will follow, but first we wanted to highlight a few selections.

Arrow is one of the hottest shows on television and a bonafide hit for the CW. This writer gave up after season 1 but is tempted to get back into it after reviews were consistently great last season. With season 3 not premiering until October 8 there’s time to catch up.

We didn’t expect it to work well as a movie, but Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa was surprisingly good. With the traditional Jackass humor and an added storyline, this movie was a bit of a risk and it paid off.

Blue Ruin technically got added at the end of last month, but we’re including it here anyway because it’s one of the best movies of the year. It almost never got made (it barely made its relatively small $35 thousand Kickstarter goal). In our review we said Blue Ruin was a perfect example of “truly good storytelling” that is far too uncommon. The movie is filled with nearly unbearable tension, and you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Writer and director Richard Linklater has made headlines with Boyhood, the best movie so far this year, and a different movie of his has just hit Netflix streaming. That movie is School of Rock, the film that stars Jack Black as a man masquerading as a substitute teacher. Linklater has made better movies, but this one is still strong to this day.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar winning film Silver Linings Playbook will be making its way to Netflix this month too. The film is one of the best movies of the past two years, and it’s filled with fantastic performances (four of them were nominated for Oscars, but only Lawrence won). If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll want to put this into your queue right away.
