Josh Boone’s New Mutants was originally set to hit theaters on April, but we’ve since learned that Fox had decided to push the film back a year. Now, we’re finally getting a bit more insight as to why the X-Men spinoff has been delayed.

Earlier this year, Fox revealed that it had moved a few things around on its release calendar. The shake-up brought with it some great news, such as a new earlier release date for the highly anticipated Deadpool 2.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good news. In addition, the studio announced that it would be pushing back the release date of two of its X-Men spinoffs, one of which included Josh Boone’s New Mutants.

If it had kept its original release date, New Mutants would have hit theaters this April. Instead, the film won’t be premiering until February 2019.

Originally, it seemed to be a money move to ensure New Mutants and Deadpool 2 wouldn’t be competing against each other at the box office in certain overseas markets. Now, we’re learning that there could be more to the story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the real reason New Mutants was pushed back has to do with a series of reshoots for the film which won’t take place until later this year.

“The horror-themed New Mutants will undergo around of additional photography this summer that will insert a new character into the thriller that is dated for February 22, 2019,” a source told THR.

It’s interesting to hear that the film is looking to add a new character that wasn’t in the original script so late in the game. More importantly, we’re curious to know which mutant they’ll be adding into the mix.

Currently, we know that the new X-Men spinoff will feature mutants Sunspot (Henry Zaga), Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), and Mirage (Blu Hunt).

As fans of the comic book series know, however, there are plenty of other mutants they could be adding to the bunch, including Cypher, Magma, and Warlock, all of whom join the team after their original leader dies.

Reshoots to add in the new character are expected to start this summer, so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for casting announcements over the next few months!

New Mutants hits theaters on February 22, 2019.
