Actor Hafthor Julius Bjornsson will be taking over the role of Gregor ‘the Mountain’ Clegane in Game of Thrones season 4. See him in action!

Over the course of four seasons of Game of Thrones, the role of Gregor Clegane (the Hound’s terrifying older brother) has been played by no less than three different actors.

In season 3, Ian Whyte took over from original actor Conan Stevens, and this year one of Iceland’s strongest men, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, has picked up the Mountain’s torch (nerdy pun very much intended).

The new Mountain is no less fearsome than the previous two, which is good, as the figure is meant to inspire fear and hate in the people that see him.

In Game of Thrones season 1, we learned that Ser Gregor was a rotten egg since childhood: Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) tells Sansa (Sophie Turner) the story of how the Mountain shoved his little brother Sandor (Rory McCann)’s head into the fire and burned half his face away, after he caught the younger boy playing with one of his toys.

Later in the season, Ned Stark issued a warrant for his head, and he has been at large ever since, working for Tywin Lannister – he was last seen butchering 200 Northmen at Harrenhal, and taking off with his men.

In season 4, we dread to think what he will be up to – we’re sure he won’t be as pleasant to look at as this smiling Bjornsson, who posted the following picture of himself on Instagram:

Meanwhile, his brother Sandor is traveling with Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), after escaping from the Stark butchery at the Twins.

Will the two brothers finally confront each other? Or do their paths remain separate? We’ll have to wait and see.

Game of Thrones season 4 premieres in the spring of 2014.
