Finally, the New Girl season 5 premiere date has been revealed! To celebrate, here is our wishlist for the season.

After months of waiting, Fox has finally revealed that New Girl season 5 will premiere on January 5, 2016. It’s still going to air on Tuesday nights, but is moving to an earlier time slot at 8 p.m. ET.

When New Girl season 4 ended, we lost one of our favorite characters, Coach, but we also got one of our favorite couples back, Cece and Schmidt. Winston was left with only the storyline of his new career as a police officer. And Jess and Nick seemed to be up in the air in terms of their will they/won’t they get back together.

So here’s what we hope to see when New Girl season 5 premieres:

Jess

With Zooey Deschanel’s maternity leave, we’ll be seeing less of Jess this season than we’re used to. That could either be a great thing or an awful thing, but we’re hoping for the best. We know Jess will be in the first five episodes before her character is said to leave town sequestered on jury duty.

It would actually be interesting to see what would happen if Jess and Nick started to have more feelings at the beginning of New Girl season 5, only to have Jess be forced to leave town just a little while later. It would definitely test them, as we’ve never seen them apart for a long period of time since Jess moved into the loft. Would distance make the heart grow fonder or weaker? We would certainly be interested to find out!

We also love the shenanigans that go on at Jess’ work, so we hope to see more of the school and its teachers!

Nick

It seems like Nick will be in an interesting place this season. His best friend just got engaged and the love of his life is going to be leaving town, so what will Nick do when he’s essentially left to his own devices? He might just keep being the lazy guy around the house. But that would actually be pretty boring, and too easy for the writers.

We hope Nick realizes where he wants to go in life. The reason he and Jess broke up wasn’t a loss of love, but a lack of responsibility on his end. Maybe without her around to help him through things, Nick will learn to adult on his own. We saw a little bit of this last season when he started following his passion of creating things, but it’d be nice to see something a bit more realistic, like a growing career at the bar. We could see him taking the bar over and making something big out of it.

Winston

On the last season of New Girl we saw Winston take some great strides in his career. He finally made his dream a reality and became a police officer. We’d love to see more of his growth as a police office and the situations that result from his social awkwardness.

Even though we love Ferguson, we’re kind of tired of this crazy cat guy that he’s grown into. We’ve yet to see Winston meet “the one,” and instead we always see girls who just take advantage of him. It seems like it’s time for Winston to get into a real relationship. Or at least meet the girl who could become a real relationship for him, since we know the writers love to drag those things out for us.

Schmidt

Will Schmidt be able to settle down for good? That seems to be the question to be answered this season. We don’t want to see any more back and forth with Cece, so hopefully no breakups are on the horizon for them. What we do want to see is how Schmidt and Cece will handle bringing their lives together as one, which should be especially challenging since they just got back together and have never lived together.

Seeing their wedding planning should be fun, and we hope to see their families meet up. They come from very different backgrounds, so that offers up lots of territory for the writers to cover. Plus, we do expect to see some of their old issues come back up, although we hope that they can be resolved.

Cece

Last season on New Girl, Cece started a journey to better herself. This meant quitting her modeling career and getting a job as a bartender. Although it might not seem like much, it was a big step for Cece. She also started going to college with help from Winston and Coach. We hope to see more of Cece’s individual growth in season 5 so her character isn’t solely centered around Schmidt.

Obviously this won’t be Cece’s first time planning a wedding, so it should be interesting to see how she handles that. Will she be more or less excited this time around? We kind of expect Schmidt to be a little more into it than Cece, so we hope to see a difference in how they handle things. Even though we fully expect to see the wedding dealt with the season, we don’t actually want it to happen right away. Since it’s pretty typical for engagements to last more than a year, we hope that is reflected on the show.
